  • Eisemann shielded mags LA-4

I have a pair of these, last reported serviceable, and I'm considering what to do with them. I can get them certified with an EASA Form 1 (accepted by the FAA).

    Both come with harness.

Anyone have an honest opinion on their value, yellow-tagged?

Interesting question. How does getting them from GB impact it? I REALLY like LA-4s, but does shipping and paying over there have any issues?

Shipping from the UK would be expensive, of course. For the purposes of valuation, you'd have to assume shipping from the lower 48.

Or ignore shipping at all...just their intrinsic value.

If someone was a real enthusiast for them they would pay well. As long as even old NOS parts are available these things in my judgement are really marvelous magnetos. The two I overhauled are still running great after 150 hrs or so with (this AM) only a 25 RPM drop. I have spare cases and quite a few parts. They will fire a plug with a .035 gap. If you compare their coil to others you will know why.

Do they have gears with them and couplers? I'm not a prospective buyer, but that would affect price.

It is going to be a sad day when the cases are all ground up or melted down.

Oh, if anyone is getting some repaired or repairing them they might want to check with me, I know at least one or two tricks on them.

Darryl, I have a couple that are in poor shape, two that are on the 41 and a box of parts and cases. Maybe we all need to start working together to make as many good ones as we can. I think they are great too.

One thing to check on Eisemann's is the Rotating Magnet in the Oil Seal area.

Often a groove is worn & there is no repair.

Bendix/TCM has a sleeve where the seal rides so

            they don't have the problem.

              Re: Eisemann shielded mags LA-4

I've just used my last NOS coil on an Eismann, so I have about 4 coil cores that I'm thinking of getting rewound. The Eisemann manual does not specify the coil data. One has to have the coil tester, which apparently has that data.

I note that Fresno advertise (I assume NOS) coils (and rotating magnets)...does anyone have info as to their availability?

Sorry for delay in replying; I've been flying in Scotland for a week.

We have a guy in Virginia Beach who has a certified repair station for mags, starters and generators. He can rewind almost anything from what I have seen and does lots of old parts. I can check with him to see if he has done an Eismann Mag. Do you have any details on the cores?

We have a guy at our airport that does mag repairs. I'm not impressed with his knowledge, just talking to him, but he's a good guy and might have some kind of information on the coils. I'll check. Actually now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure I have some information somewhere. I'll talk and look.
If I don't get back to this soon enough with information, send me a reminder message. I've been rather busy lately.

                    Rob,
I can give the guys at FAP a call for you if you like. Were even in the same area code I think, about 40(?) miles from here. Let me know what you want checked. The guy down there is a good dude.

Hank, I wouldn't mind working on them again. Would be nice not to forget the things that I learned.

I probably should pull mine off and check the bearings. The applicability of the bearing grease and the durability of the shims is the only thing I have any concern about. Was going to let them run in for a while and then check. Have to pull the engine. YUK.

Not this week though. 103 F today expect 100 plus all week.

                    Darryl
