      All you tandems switching out your A-65s for the bigger HP engines, remember to offer your old 65 to the rest of the tribe first! I sure would like to have one on the bench getting a full major so I could hang it right on when my present one needs a tear down.

        Terry, what exhaust is used with your conversion?

            Impossible on a -12 without modifying it. An ercoupe muffler works exceptionally better, and you still have to modify the stacks no matter what you do to clear the generator even if retaining the factory muffler.

              Mike,
              During the course of this project, it has already been done on 3 airplanes with no mod to the exhaust. One was an O-200A and the others were C85-12.

              (No Alternator or Generator) For this reason, the STC does not include an alternator or generator. It requires separate approval and possibly mod to exhaust, depending on which alternator to be used. There are some little ones out there. We are investigating this now.

                That was what I was getting at. Stock exhaust will not work with installation of the generator. Been there done that several times. The stock muffler has to be rotated to clear the generator. I doubt it wil work at all with an Ford alternator being it is much larger in diameter, plus it has to be dropped several inches to get below the generator since that is where the muffler was. You definitely need to include the exhaust mod in the STC, as other FSDO's around the country may not approve the exhaust mod even though it is legal to bolt the motor on. A good example of that cluster **** is the STC to install a 220 on a Fairchild 24. The motor mount is approved, but no paperwork that says you can install the 220. Go figure......

                Ercoupe muffler works perfectly. What I have yet to try is a factory PA-18-90 exaust to see if the front stack will clear the nose bowl. If it does, problem solved, add the part number to the STC as a requirement for installation with generator or alternator on -12 engines.

                Have you addressed the increased dimension of the C90-14 or O-200 installation with dynafocal mounts? Cowling will require to be extended to be reinstalled.

                What about increased cooling requirements. All our 85 L-2's oil temps have run on the hot side. I will be installing Alon baffling on the next one we do to try and combat the oil temps.

                    Yes... these have been addressed. STC includes drawings for spacer cones to use the A65 style rubber cones. This has been done on Luscombes. Works great... keeps the engine located properly inside the cowl.

                    Cooling has been no sweat so far on both C85 (open cowl) and O-200 (closed cowl).

                    I lost your number... email it to me - [email protected]

                        I have the Bowden STC on my L2A. It just got out of annual. For various reasons me and my L2 haven't flown for awhile. Last weekend I fired her up and did pattern work. God do I love this L2 with the 85Hp/Don's Dream Machine o-200 crank making 93Hp. For flying around Denver this combination is a real winner. It is an absolute 105-108 mph 11,500 go get'em winner. Thanks to Terry Bowden for the brain-damage he put himself through for the STC.

                        If you're looking for me... Look up, I'm headed toward the Wild Blue Yonder!
                        With regards to all those on this board. ED OBRIEN

                            Bill Berle;
                            So good to see your typing! I've renamed my L2 "The Good General Jack."
                            I know you are a history buff. So here's a blog I've been writing on Maj. Gen. Jack (john F.) Curry: http://captalk.net/index.php?PHPSESS...5&topic=5582.0

                            He was quite a guy that flew 65HP BC12s all over the state of Colorado and surveyed the low passes of the west during and just after WW2.

                            I've got about 40 entries in this thread, so it's enough to cross your eyes. BUT, darn interesting man! This should get your history buffed up, a little.

                            With regards;
                            ED OBRIEN

                              Ed the link did not come up (time out error) so I could not see your story on the General. I will be interested to see it.

                              Glad you're back in the air. Now stay there! Old age and treachery...
