  • Paperwork question

Looking through the historical documents for my L-2 and trying to figure out mods that were done to it over the decades.

The one lingering question I have is engine paperwork. My plane flew with its A-65 until the early 1960s. At that point, it was in storage for the next 35 years. Rebuilt in the mid-1990s and, per the owner, flew with an A-65, A-75, C-85, and back to A-65. No entries in the airframe log for the engine change(s). Question 1: should there have been? Obviously the engine log(s) would remain with the respective engines.

Question 2: The TCDS A-746 makes no mention of the A-75 or C-85 as an approved substitute engine so I was curious what paperwork would have been used? CAP STCs seem a relatively recent thing. Or were these engine changes non-approved installations?

Probably unapproved changes. Don't worry to much about what it was in the past. Worry about what it is now, that is what the FAA will deal with.

I just looked at the STC for engine changes. It listed the C-85/90 and 0-200. I found it interesting that it did not mention the A-75. The FAA states that any increase of horse power of 10 hp or greater requires an STC. I find no STC specifically addressing the A-75. I may have missed it but if so, are there aircraft out there with illegal engines?
My engine was changed in 62. An entry was made in both the engine and airframe logbooks. But, I don't know if an airframe entry is required.

It is actually 10% or more, not 10HP. This change happened in the last 20 years or so. Anything before that could have been done with a field approval. And the answer is yes, there are airplane flying around out there that are illegal. That doesn't mean they aren't safe though.

I make entries for the installation of the new engine and removal of the old in the airframe logbook. I also make an entry in the engine log as to the aircraft it was installed on.
You would need a STC for the installation not covered by the TCDS.
Don't waste your time with the A-75, it's just advertisement HP. By the time you get a prop to spin up to rated RPM it just wont pull the airplane around. It has a specific TCDS for the A-75.

You are so correct 3Dreaming. I stand corrected.

I would only worry about the current configuration. Anything that happened in the past that was reconfigured to acceptable current paperwork, then forget about what was done and ensure that it conforms NOW. Tim
