  • Taylorcraft B series, 1:48 scale model

Dad had a solid wood 1:48 scale Tcraft model when I was a little kid, painted in the factory 2-tone scheme, light yellow over red. It had a metal, spinning prop. I got to play with it a lot and when older I was permitted to repaint it as I did hundreds of models when a kid. He didn't know and I could never find out what it was.

I could find no information here so I set up a search bot on eBay which returned mostly Comet models but after two years, jackpot!!!

Up pops a Maircraft model, after searching for literally 4 decades it is found. They made lots of these after the war, there are some modeler sites that have some info on Maircraft. After a successful bid as no one else bid, I have a match. Now with a license to hunt, I found and now have three original, in-the-box, unfinished ones.

They are pretty spartan with respect to content, slabs for wing, vertical, horizontal, prop and gear legs. There are packets in all of them with only 3 sticks for the struts and two main wheels. There is a rough fuselage shaped block. They all just have 3 struts, don’t know why. You are supposed to carve a wood prop & spinner so Dad must have done a metal conversion, just like 39911.

The included plans are exceptionally well done and they expect you to go source the details. As the contents are so basic and to keep the kits original, I’ll probably just get fresh raw stock and do a couple from the plans.

The photos show the kit and Dad’s model as I repainted it, with at the time was an eye to what 39911’s restoration might be. I also attached a scanned in hi-res pdf of the plans which is a B size sheet. Yes the box says 1/4 scale, it’s really 1/48. The Tcraft kit model number is S-17.

You have to print it on a B sheet as the templates and cutouts are scaled and font size is quite small.

    Enjoy!

Wow! What a wonderful little solid model. This looks like it would be a blast to build and I agree that building the original kits would be a real mistake. They should only go UP in value and why not just make a model from new material if you want to build one? What is needed next is a scan of the box so it could be printed on new cardboard and folded up to put next to the model replica! You would have to scan each side and the ends, but should be good enough to piece the scans together to make the box too. What a great display for he hangar or office.

    PS
1/4 inch scale refers to 1/4" to the foot, or as you measured. 1:48 of full size. Been a while since I saw a model marked that way.

Thanks Hank, I was wondering about the scale.

Not sure about the "value" going up much, I found these for between $15-25, shipping was almost as much as the model. I bought more than one as I was not sure how complete they would be, have plans, etc...

      Thanks, Mark
