      Re: Field Approval Guidance 8300-16

I was looking for the bit where it says," After initial disapproval, resubmit in triplicate for final disapproval."

That must be in the previous edition.

FAA Order 8110.37 addresses field approvals by reinforcing that DERs are not authorized to perform them. It also recommends including a note in the body of FAA Form 8110-3 that states, “This approval is for engineering design data only and is not an installation approval.” This does not prevent the data from being used as the basis for a major alteration or repair. When sufficient DER data has been obtained, the approval process applicable to the alteration is complete; the product can then be inspected for conformity and approved for return to service. The person performing the alteration, rather than the DER, is then responsible for conforming and approving the installation. DER data is not a field approval, but is approved data that, like other approved data, can be used in the performance of major alterations or repairs without further approval if the data addresses the entire alteration or repair. In this case, you do not need to request a field approval from the FAA. FAA Order 8300.16 provides guidance on this subject and is available at http://www.airweb.faa.gov/rgl

          Re: Field Approval Guidance 8300-16

Thank you Doctor, I got an approval from Terry Bowden to put the aluminum sheet over the fuel tanks, it said the data was approved, an FAA PMI got to looking at my airplane records, called me and asked if I was flying the airplane, I said no, still working on it, he said, that's good- otherwise i'd violate you, the paperwork on the tank cover needs my approval, I didn't mess with him, I did what he asked, send him the 337 and he stamped block 3, I don't argue with those guys, I've had my IA for a long time, hope to keep it a few more years, gary

Something does not make sense regarding the PMI's threat.

DER's 8110-3 is approved data and an AI can work with that (as Tim stated already).

            This snippet is from 8300_16

            9-5. DER.
            a. A properly authorized DER may be employed by an applicant in order to provide approved technical data to support a major repair or alteration.
            (1) If the DER is employed by the applicant prior to involving the FAA and the applicant has determined that the DER has provided all the approved data necessary for the repair or alteration, then no field approval is required.

              Gary,

Just curious did you happen to start a field approval before you went to a DER?? That may be why PMI spoke as he did.

I got the paperwork all made out and sent it straight to Terry B.

And I've done several other items DER approved, I asked the PMI if there were other items that needed changing and he said no

Buy him (the PMI) lunch sometime. Maybe he feels neglected and under tasked?

                      Re: Field Approval Guidance 8300-16

If its approved data by the DER and covers entirety of work needed, you as the IA should be able to submit the 337 straight to records and bypass FSDO, as always unless something has changed and Im not reading the post correctly.
