    Re: Formula 1 rules

Interesting stuff re the carb and allowed engine mods. Crossbolt install on the C-85 for additional power/potential crankshaft/crankcase flexing issues. Venturi to about 1.5", float level, and main feed nozzle to max I.D. with the MA3-SPA and 1.5" intake tube match. Not much on exhaust systems or 4>1 collectors like Cub Crafters implemented for their O-200's and others. Bet there's lots of experiments with that component.

NO METAL PROPS ALLOWED! Seems Catto and others are safer and proven to absorb the additional power and any vibes. Plus a safety cable to keep the engine attached in case of trauma.

      Re: Formula 1 rules

A few years ago (19!)we had a F1 race at my home field, and ......

"The race proceded without incident until, as G-AXDZ
approached the finish line at high speed and at about 100 feet AGL, it passed close to a slower
aircraft as it overtook it. At this point, the pilot experienced a violent force accompanied by a
sudden rearward movement of the control column which was snatched from his hand. The aircraft
then entered a divergent pitch oscillation for about four cycles before it struck the runway and
      disintegrated."

He survived, and flew again, despite hitting the ground at (estimated) over 200mph. I was there and watched it and assumed the worst, given the amount of wood splintering. His Nomex suit and foam-filled tank prevented the fire getting to him more; the volunteer fire crew bodily picked the inverted wreckage up (still aflame) and got him out and saved his life. Despite the bone dome, he was well scalped by the wreckage sliding inverted along the runway; the erosion wore through his bone dome and his scalp just to the skull. With some blood loss as might be imagined.

I've taken up tiddlywinks since then!
