  • Rebuilding ribs, rebuilding wings

I'd love to get some advice on where to start when rebuilding wings. I have one wing with both spars broken. The plane was flipped over in a thunderstorm. The broken wing was taken apart and stored along with the "good" wing in a barn. Moisture and mice or maybe moisture from mice, caused quite a bit of corrosion on the bottom chord of the ribs in the "good" wing. The spars in the "good" wing seem fine and it looks like it can be repaired. The other wing is really a problem. i don't know if I have all the parts. Plus the broken spars.
    1.Can broken spars be repaired.
2.How far gone is too far gone when you have corrosion on ribs.
3.Should I take the "good" wing apart to use as a template for the broken wing.
    4. Are there any good books on wing building I could use as a guide.
5.Can somebody come to Maryland and hold my hand while I attempt to rebuild these wings. I think I need a hug.

    A tip for domestic tranquiliity

Here is a hint that I learned today. If you are bead blasting in the garage and are covered with glass media do not walk into the house and track/drip media on the kitchen floor. SWMBO did not appreciate having the kitchen turned into a skating rink.

Of course the garage floor and driveway are also slippery now.....

      Wing Rebuild

There isn't any such thing as too far gone to rebuild. They just get so bad you give up on them. DON'T take the good wing apart for a guide on the bad one!! Hang it up on the wall of your shop and use it as a guide ALL PUT TOGETHER. If you take it apart you will need a third wing to figure out how to build up the good one again.
If you are going to completly rebuild the wing why not put in new spars. I was never comfortable with splices in spars (unless they are way out towards the tip). Save the old broken spar material, most of the wood in them will be nicer than you can get now days and there are a thousand uses for the wood.
On the "T" section pre-war ribs, I haven't had to fix one yet so I haven't made splice material. I understand someone in the tribe made a rolling tool to make it from metal stock. Be ready to spend a LOT of time punching those little tiny rivets. Makes it easy to see why they went to the stamped sheet ribs. I can't figure why they went to the "T" section over the wood ribs.
Where in MD are you? I'm just down in Virginia Beach with a shee metal rib 45 wing to assemble. It would be really great to build up and trammel them together.

        Hank,
I am about 15 minutes north of the Harry Nice bridge where rt. 301 crosses over the Potomac River into southern Md.
If you want some company and someone to hold the dumb end of the tape measure I would be glad to ride on down to Va. Beach(I just gotta get my passport stamped first). Sitting at the feet of the zen master would be an honor and perhaps I might even learn something. Seriously I'd like to give you a hand let me know when!
