  • Louvers or Lip or Both?

I was looking at the restoration pictures of G-BREY and puzzling to myself. I need to redo the bottom cowl, but I'm not sure what to do about the louvers. #1705 was a BL-65 but it has a "modern" pressure cowl on an A65 now. I like the looks of those louvers Rob has on his. I guess having them indented is more effective at drawing air through the cowl? I've never seen them like that before-- on anything. It must work a little like a NACA scoop.

The other question is whether to make the sexy little kicked out lip on the trailing edge of the cowl. I notice G-BREY doesn't have it but other ships do. Any consensus out there or input from the tribe?

    Hi Josh,

I do have the lip as well as the louvres. I think my engine runs a bit cooler than necessary, so iin the winter I have to block off the front air intake.

Here's a picture of the lip (excuse the messy cowl!)

Thanks, Rob! That's just the picture I needed. I notice that the louvers also have little raised edges on the outside as well. That is a tremendous help!

I'd be much more concerned if the cowling was spotlessly clean. That would indicate it isn't flying!
