  • Tail Brace Wire Attach Hardware?

Hi everyone, I'm restoring a 1946 BC12-D. I put the tail brace wires on today and the hole in the strap fits nicley over the bushings welded in the horz. and vert. stabs but the nut tightens down before the strap will "seat" against the tube in the stabs. My question is, is this normal or is there suposed to be a washer on each strap that will fit over the welded bushing holding the strap tight against the stab? As of now I just have AN-4 washers under the nuts (this is the way it was when I took it apart). I can't read the required hardware in the service manual, the print is too small.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Ryan Johnson

There is a drawing in one of the old newsletters that shows exactly what hardware to use. You DON'T want to deviate from the right hardware! It puts stresses in places they shouldn't be and a lot of planes are put together wrong in the tail wires.
If someone else doesn't have a scan I should be able to take a photo of the drawings tomorrow and post it. Everybody should really take a look and make sure their planes are assembled right. We don't need another strut fiasco.

      Here ya go....
But don't give me credit, I obtained it from someone here on the forums.
There is someone here who has/had the correct washers available, but i can't remember who at the moment.....

I made my own, using the tailplane tube dimension as the ID and the strap radius as the OD. 15 minutes on a lathe with some steel bar stock.

Robert, that's a great idea. How did you cut them into washers after the lathe and to what thickness?

They are standard SAE washers at our Lowe's & Tractor supply inside dia. is for 416 outside is for 616 they keep the strap from slipping off the stub , the strap is designed to rotate on the stub sticking out of the stab & fin.

Yep this is what we did. But we ground the washers down to the proper O.D. so it looks origonal. Larry

Well you just part them off from the machined bar. I made mine 3/4" outside diameter (probably slightly too large...you will see that I had to curve them a little bit on the vertical stabiliser. Thickness: I made mine 1mm (0.0395" )thick. I used stainless steel, to save the corrosion issues.

exactly correct it allows the strap to rotate on the stub.
