What is the history of the engine cowling on a 1939 BL or BC-65? Was the engine enclosed inside the cowling or did the cylinders stick out?

Re: engine cowlings
All A and B models prior to 1940 had open cowls with exposed cylinders. In 1940 and 1941, the "Deluxe" model had a full cowl, while cheaper versions retained the open cowl. Full cowling was exclusively used post-war.
