The Shinn brakes on NC22211 are pretty wrecked. I would like to replace them with mechanical brakes, such as the early Cleveland double shoe brakes. Any ideas on good conversions? I do not want to go hydraulic, unless there is just no other option. Really don't want modern brakes, but need something just good enough for the mag check! Thanks Bob

Re: Mechanical Brakes
My F19 has the Cleveland mechanical brakes and they are not as effective as the Shinn brakes plus they only fit the 1.5" axle as far as I know. You would have to weld 2 pulley brackets on to your gear legs to use the Cleveland's. What is worn out on your brakes? I know someone that might have what you need.Jason

Re: Mechanical Brakes
Jason: Thanks! Yes, the tapered axle shaft is the problem, which is what lead me to ask if anyone had a fix. Was hoping there was a tried and true changeover secret amongst the gang. Don't know what to say about our Shinns - the backer plates were crushed - don't know how. It looks as if someone attempted to jack the plane by resting jacks on the back lip of the wheels, things slid, and the backer plates got smashed upwards as the plane settled. Only one of the possibilities, though. Internally, one has no guts that are salvageable due to rust. The other is salvageable with a lot of restoration. Basically, both existing brakes need replacing with useable units. We're open for any suggestions! Bob Coolbaugh

Re: Mechanical Brakes
Jason: Yes, the axles are great and the wheel halves are serviceable - just need some heavy duty cleaning up. It is the backer plates, shoes and other guts which need replacing. I will get up a parts required list, post it here and see what the gang has to assist in the overhaul. Thanks Bob

Re: Mechanical Brakes
I just opened up my Shinn brakes. The last time I looked at them was 37 years ago. I think they may have had a new set of linnings in the 1980s. Bottom line is the Shoes are shot . rusted and pitted. Is Skybound the place to buy parts? If not where can I get some shoes?

Re: Mechanical Brakes
Howdy: I disassembled three sets of wheels/brakes and salvaged six backing plates (3L & 3R), shoes, adjusters, springs - bead blasted by me, and white cadmium plated by Jordan Propellor Plating Shop - serviceable. I rebuilt one set for my bird. Skybound has a Shinn parts list - I did not see the backing plates listed, but I purchased linings, rivets, aluminum dust covers (R & L), and grease seals (inner & outer) from them - expensive, but new parts. Out of the 3 wheel sets, I was able to salvage 5 outer halves,4 inner halves and 6 axles. By the way, removing the inner half wheel races was quite inetesting. DocDoc TF #680

Re: Mechanical Brakes
I made adapter for my tapered axles if anyone wants pics, I will have to e-mail them....I am using McCauley's from a cessna 150 and pacer pedals with F-21 master cylinders.....It looks more natural and stops my 8.50's easily... TimN29787
