  • Cowl bumps again

Has anybody tried Wag-Aero's PA-11 bumps?
They seem like a reasonably priced alternative to most others I've seen!

We manufacture and sell FAA/PMA'd parts for many general aviation and vintage aircraft including Aeronca, Cessna, Piper and Taylorcraft.

I personally haven't, I don't use them. But I have seen something similar on a T-Craft, probably uglier than most. Sorry, just not a big fan. Good luck!

These are the cowl tops from my hangar pile. There are probably a couple more in back I can't get to easily.

Forgot to put on why I was posting these while messing with the photos. Which type of bump are you looking for?

I have a couple different styles in my pile as well, both on cowls and off (none on the plane just now...running C26 plugs on top). Probably pretty doggone easy to make a plug mold if someone wants to gin up a fiberglass set themselves, particularly of the couple I have un-mounted. If anyone has an interest I'll send them pics of what I have and go from there.

Here are some my dad made out of aluminum for a clip wing Taylorcraft. I also shortened the Slick leads by machining some of the small center nut off.

Those are actually NICE looking! I could probably live with those. The ones I had on mine looked like tapered canoes.

Do you know were I could find some like the type of bump that is on the white cowl?

I'm looking for any type that will cover the holes I had to cut to allow the use of upper sparkplugs on my 85hp.
I have a short engine mount & the short REM plugs on top but still had to cut 3 holes for room.

David (Thrashnic), those are he ones on my plane right now. They are plastic and pop riveted in from the inside. When I put the new cowl on you could have them but they are not very good. I would use them to make a mold to build new glass ones or make a buck to tap out metal ones. I am hoping to put a new cowl on mine this summer with no bumps so I am sure we could work something out. The cowl itself DOES NOT have the right hinges. There are two piano hinges and the center metal strip screws into the two holes front and rear from the correct hinges. I will be going back with original all over.

Hank: I would buy bumps from either 1st or 2nd pic if you would consider removing & shipping?

The wing pulley covers from a J-3 would be a good start. These are avialable from Wag Aero, both plastic and metal. The only problem is the slot.

Thank you that would be great, contact me when they are available. In the mean time I will brush up on glassing.

The bumps are on the plane right now but I will be making a new top cowl very soon. I will pull the bumps off and make molds before I send them to anyone so we can make more. I don't think you will want to actually put these bumps on your plane. That way Randy, David and anyone else who wants some can have them. As for cost, whatever it costs to make and ship them (or new ones).

Part of my T-craft stash...White ones are plastic, other two pair are aluminum and tapered (hard to tell in the pic). I have a couple of styles of small bumps mounted on cowls at home. Thinking about trying to make a couple of molds and bucks and trying my hand at pounding a few out for guys at my field. I kinda prefer the small ones (x 4) on one of the cowls at home....actually prefer none at all (43319 has no bumps).
