    When this happens, you need to check EVERYTHING till you get her to work. NO idea is off the reservation. I will be tucking away all these suggestions for the next time I have a problem. One of them might not be MY problem, but more suggestions for someone else who is out of ideas is always good.

      About the plugs guys, I am the one who changed them, and I did them one plug at a time to make sure that the harnesses were right. I am thinking that it is stone cold engine starting, vs. pretty warm engine being hard to start. I am in El Paso now, and after we get out of the BK, we are going to the airport, and I will check EVERYTHING, and report back. (We had our T-Day dinner last night with a 75 year old Air force Veteran pilot friend that we visit every Wednesday, and Sunday evening to spend three hours of conversation, a movie, and good Coffee with). Everyone have a good day today, and DON'T screw up your weight and balance too much.

        The intake rubbers all looked good, and there was no fuel seeping from any of the carb. body gaskets. Next week, we will rebuild the NAS-3, and see if that helps.

          I believe I would start with the easy stuff first, If the carb works when its cold and once you get it running, I wouldn't jump to rebuild it.

          Did you drain the fuel and replace it? Or add fresh on top of the old? Was it auto gas or 100LL? Autogas turns nasty pretty quick. Im not sure what the shelf life of 100LL is, somebody else might chime in.

            Storage life, on average, for autogas is six months and 100LL is one year.

              If it had 100LL I doubt that there would be a fuel problem even after several years.

                I only brought up the idea of crossed plug wires because of all the things listed in the original post, only checking compression was related to the engine. Everything else was landing gear related. I hope you don't take offense. I promise none was intended.

                The starting problem really seems like a timing issue based on the remark about the prop kicking back. But from what I can determine from the posts, the impulse coupler has been eliminated as a possibility. I don't know much about the internal workings of mags, but if there is something inside that could cause them to fire before they are supposed to, that is where I would focus. The only other possibility that would cause the prop to kick back would be if the exhaust valve wasn't opening when it should. I would be very surprised to hear that overhauling the carburetor solved the problem. But as Hank posted, check EVERYTHING. But also always look for the simplest solution first.

                  Check everything, and tell the rest of us everything you check. What wasn't wrong on yours may be what IS wrong on ours next time.

                      No, we haven't. I know how, but it kills my lower back to do it, so I will pay my friend the A&P to do it, and let all of you fine folks know how it turns out. We will do it on Monday or so. THANKS for the tip. I don't know WHY I would check the timing, and NOT the points.

                        If the points are shot, chances are high the condensor is failing too.
