  • Tach and Cable Question

    Hey all,

I have a tachometer, possible an older AC type, that I want to have restored. However, the cable attachment at the back has an internal thread as opposed to the external threads that are more prevalent. My current tach cable is set-up for the external threads and I really haven't found one with the internal style of threads. Any thoughts?
    Cheers,
    Marty

There was a tach speedo shop in milwaukee wis that made mine. Can't remember the name, may be out of service. Might try old car magazine or old tractor magazine for phone number. George

any speedometer shop should be able to make the cable for you. We lost our local shop and have had trouble getting exact speedo cables I have needed ever since.

Thanks, guys. I just realized I have another issue with this. Not so much a cable issue as the 90 degree fitting at the back of the speedometer. I need that fitting for the internal threads, not the cable. I completely forgot about the fitting.

                    Re: Tach and Cable Question

Most of the 90* ends can be taken apart and the input switched to reverse the direction of rotation. I used to have a 90* with female threads on one leg and male on the other as well as a tach with a backwards connection. I just stuck them together and they are probably still in one of the storage boxes.
Just make sure the cable is turning so the spiral is TIGHTENING as the engine is turning it. If it is trying to open the twisted cable it won't last as long.
