  • Engine Baffle Issues

So I had another post on this aircraft rebuild but I thought I'd start a new one for this issue I'm having. Old thread.

I found you guys when I decided I wanted to find a Taylorcraft project. Great place for research and low and behold I found my project here also. I am the happy owner of N5202M, the project listed by RainierView . BC12D-85 project for sale (https://vb.taylorcraft.org/forum/taylorcraft/buy-sell-aircraft-parts-services

    Long story, long.

Bought this aircraft, N5202M, from a forum member and I'm very glad to have it. It has ill fitting cowling issues that I don't believe he new about as I bought it in the same condition that he bought it.

Anyway this is about fixing the problem not throwing rocks, as I said I'm very glad to have the project.I am kind of at a sticking point with the left side, pilot side, engine baffle. I have studied Scott's build and have a good idea on how to getting the baffles built, BUT, I am having clearance issues. I can not get the new left baffle to fit behind the cowling. It is tight right at the exhaust flange. The old stock baffle wouldn't fit behind the nose bowl, the baffle the Garry Crookham let me barrow won't fit. The nose bowl is just too tight against that left front cylinder. I need about 3/8 to 1/2 inch of clearance and can't find it. The nose bowl seems to be in good condition, small dent here an there but nothing I would think would cause interference issues.

So what do I have? Came with:

New boot cowl, new engine mount, upper and lower cowling that doesn't fit with the engine on, good nose bowl. Has a stock upper engine cowl hinge that is the correct length when compared to two others. We suspected the issue was caused by the new mount, everything there measured out good against another stock mount that has been in service. I also measured two different aircraft to get the boot cowl to nose bow spacing, at the two upper most Dzus fasteners for the lower cowling. I made up a doubler for the lower cowling to use as a spacer for that location, each side

Any suggestions or thoughts? Other things to check?

I reread through this post and I hope it doesn't sound too disjointed.

Check for squareness. Its possible to end up with the nose bowl cocked. Mine was shorter on the right than left, but the cylinders are further aft on the right so no clearance problems... just looked bad.

Nose bowl needs to be centered on the crank( check to ensure no extra washers at the engine/mount), parallel with the firewall, and straight radially ie not twisted clockwise or anticlockwise.

having said that, it's tight by design
