Question about Patrol Doors

I have a second set of doors for my 46 bc12d that I want to modify in to patrol doors. My question is, can i simply remove the metal that I want to and install plexi, or do I need to follow an STC, or apply for field approval? I searched the forum and did not come across any discussions on how people had their patrol doors approved.

I have the design figured out, but i am curious about the legality/approval of the doors. Otherwise I guess I can have my stock "annual inspection doors" and then my questionable every day use doors.

Welcome to the forum, first of all. I'm in Marion, between Kalispell and Libby.
I've always just field approved them. Our FSDO has always been reasonable to work with if given a chance.
