N3583T rebuild

The day it showed up nearly 3 years ago. I wasn't planning to take this long, but I have been doing a lot of major repairs on Super Vikings while trying to do this that was not planned.

Engine disassembled. While it looked good, the crank, cylinders, and several other parts turned out to be junk.

All prior cover work was removed and everything checked. These are the as received pics. Looks nice, but wings needed trammeled, ribs adjusted, aileron hinges out of alignment, etc.

Fuselage required some work. It had a slight twist in it that after alot of fighting, think some of it had been there since day one. the rest of it was from the hangar collapse, which 99% was fixed with a little pushing and shoving in the right spots. We also added float fittings as it will live in Alaska when done.

Fuselage assembly started. Door frames installed, fitted with doors. passenger modified to a patroller door. Custom cover made for the door latch mechanism.

Baggage compartment insulated with 1/2" closed cell fire rated foam. You can see more assembly has taken place, tail feathers being fit checked and rigged.

To rebuild the engine required buying a second engine for parts, mainly the crank. Cylinders on original engine and second engine bad, so he ended up buying a new set of cylinders I had rat holed for one of my projects. Added oil filter adapter, B&C starter, alternator, and exhaust from Terry. Overhauled mags and carb. A large portion of this engine is brand new and ended up costing twice as much as it should have only having 700 hours total time since new.

Oddly, one of the gear legs had round tubing instead of streamlined. So that had to be fixed as well.

And this brings us up to mostly current as of this month. Fuselage primed, sanded, reprimed, and one coat of color on. Ready for final sand and color coats.

Good post it reminds me of how much work goes into properly recovering a tube and fabric craft. Now a days I find that most younger pilots wanting to own a lower cost aircraft are usually not interested in covering and do not even want to assist in the work.
I like the use of the rivets over the clips. I also used them on my F21A. Did you hitch hike off the 337 thats out there? I thought about making a patroller door but decide against it since the craft didnt come with one, however, I am fabbing another door as a patroller that I can install when on skis. Also, good you added welded float fittings as they can seal a deal when selling. Nice job!
