  • Engine upgrade to C85 w/starter

    I'm wanting to put a C85-12 with skytec starter on the short mount. The starter hits the firewall. My AI wants a legal way to modify firewall for clearance. Do I need a DER drawing and paperwork to go with Terry Bowdens STC? Any one else done this?

      As a IA my initial thoughts are that it would be a minor alteration depending on how you make the clearance, an I would just do it. If your IA thinks he needs some kind of approval I would start by asking Terry.

        I'd start with getting ahold of Terry too. There's not much room behind that firewall either.....

          Hi,

          A couple of thoughts, I saw a Cub yesterday with a B & C starter that had about an inch clearance to the firewall that could be removed with a little clever wiggling. That makes me wonder if a B & C is easier to get in and out and also a better fit?

          Also I wonder that if a t-craft had a "hole" in the firewall does the main tank become the next obstruction?

            Thanks for your thoughts. The cutout would look the best and hav aprox. one inch clearance firewall to tank and need about 1/2 inch clearance for starter. The B&C and SkyTec seem to have the same length. I have heard of Tcraft with the starter mod but haven't been able to find out exactly how they made it. I have emailed Terry Bowden but haven't heard back yet. He is planing putting a 90 hp in his Tcraft when I talked to him last but hasn't started it yet.

              B&C is the shortest starter send the sky teck back and order a B&C they fit with 5/8 in from the fire wall NO MOD TO FIRE WALL.It has been doing a great job for 3 years now .

                If the Starter is to be installed, will the engine have to come off along with the whole accessory case and mags to install the starter.
                I am considering this B&C starter but wondered how much effort and time would be required to install it.
                On the back of the engine is a cover the shape of the new starter. It looks like it would be fairly straight forward to remove this cover and install the starter.
                However, I don't know the full history of this engine so not sure if there was a starter ever on it.
                Therefore don't know if there is a pin to cut off.
                I am not a mechanic but I would like to know what may be involved before ordering a starter.

                I have seen somewhere on the forum where someone had loosened the top engine mount bolts just enough to give clearance.
                Do you see this as necessary with the shorter B&C starter?
                How much AME time would be necessary to complete this and does this include a new weight and balance.

                  First is your engine a dash 12 and if it is it is meant to have a starter next if it is a dash 12 it should have a starter pinion and there is a tool that B&C rents to cut this off as it is in the way of the starter also sky-tec after that bolt the starter on the engine and install the engine on the plane. Yes on the engine mounts loosen and drop the engine down not a clue on how much time as all mechanics differ on how fast they work

                    After seeing these pictures I understand the process better.
                    looks like this shaft needs to be cut off. This appears to be the biggest concern. The mags and the accessory case were not removed but care was necessary to collect the metal debris .

                      I would consider putting a bunch of those small sintered magnets in the work area so they can grab all the metal filings.

                      Give it some thought I think it makes sense but I have not thoroughly evaluated it.

                            John the starter is 10.3 lbs and the alternator is 3.4 lbs for a total of 13.7 lbs the hole package was only about 11 lbs more then the A65 that is to include C85-12 starter alternator airforms baffles oil filter and adapter luscombe exhaust quick drain on oil tank then add the oddyssy battery at 14 lbs for a total gain of 25 lbs my ship ended up 776 lbs total.
