It's not too late to take control of the country back from the politicians. With the elections of 2010, we can send a message. Put aside party affiliations and vote out EVERY incumbant that has a challenger. If they are running un opposed, just leave that box blank as a way of showing that you do not support them. Those elected would have to understand that the "government of the people, by the people and for the people" means what is best for the country as a whole not just a few.

Re: It's Not Too Late
Everyone here should go to The Heritage Foundation and ask for a copy of The Declaration of Independence and Constitution. It's free (although they may bug you for a contribution), then READ IT! You may be really surprised what good reading it is.
When I was being commissioned in the Navy the Gunny from the Marine Detachment gave each Midshipman a copy and asked if we had ever read it. Most hadn't. He thought that since the next days we were planning on committing our lives to it, we might want to read it that night. He also pointed out that our allegiance was LIFE LONG, not just to the end of our tour.
I have carried a copy ever since (well over 30 years now). I had to replace it once when the one he gave me was stolen. I was mad at first, but now I assume whoever took it might have read it. It's like the guy who steals a hotel Bible. The Gideons will gladly replace it.

Inspirational; I will have to look for my copy on parchment I purchased from the Smithsonian while stationed at Andrews. Air force base. I was there when they burned downtown DC in 67. They issued us 1911 45s to carry on guard duty, but no ammo, I mean they didn't want us to shoot someone for gods sake!

Re: It's Not Too Late
While we are talking about getting a fresh start, how about this. I think campaign contributions should be changed. NO direct payments to candidates. Contributions paid to a general fund then doled out equally to anyone who qualifies to run. This would give more people the chance to run and should prevent politicians from being bought by major contributors. It would also keep a single candidate from "buying" the election with huge cash expenditures for advertising.Tom Peters

If we really want to stir things up, change the way the Vice President is chosen. Either vote for the VP candidate or the losing Presidential candidate becomes the Vice President. Eliminates the "party in control" mentallity.Tom Peters

Re: It's Not Too Late
A lot of us seem to be thinking along the same lines with some excellent common-sense ideas. The problem is that the only ones passing laws to control political behavior are the politicians. That is as crazy as letting the prisoners run a prison.
Problem is, the "ruling elite" (including some of the Founding Fathers, sorry,) consider(ed) most of us as uneducated (and other uns) riff-raf, requiring protection from ourselves.
The second problem is that there is enough truth in that idea for them to easily rationalize their believing it.
The third problem (this could go on forever,) is that most of the "ruling elite" are cut from the same cloth, having most of the same shortcomings.
I feel much better now. Chuckle.

Re: It's Not Too Late
It is a sure thing that the country needs to have a very large number of people from the " silent majority" to finally say "say enough is enough" and start standing up for themselves and voicing there views to all the yahoos in Washington. Not just wait around until next November.
Check the video speech at this website link for an organization trying to compete with the liberal bent of AARP!!!
AMAC is here to protect your conservative interests, and offer alternative perspectives on how to best solve the problems seniors face today.

There's one phrase in the oath of US citizenship that has never fully been tested...
"against enemies from WITHIN and without"
Lord help me but that phrase is becoming more and more relevant every day.Taylorcraft : Making Better Aviators for 75 Years... and Counting
