Dale - any chance you took photographs of the mods? I've always wondered what exactly entailed the wing mod?

Sean, you might try lenawee airport Adrian, mich. which is where my bc12d went after I sold it. Walkair aviation. They train with it along with an allegro. You can see a picture of it at taylorcraft aircraft photos, scroll to no. 6......photo taken at mayville n.y. When I owned it. It's red, white and blue, polished prop, 65 HP. A trophy winner. Hope this helps. I paid 24,500 for it five years ago. Had it been a cub in the same condition, it would have brought fourty grand. The rebuilder was a real pro. It had around 600 hrs on the engine. Flawless inside and out. JC.

I purchased the STC when Bob Harer owned it and Bob assured me that I could do the wing mods and GW change to 1280 lbs while keeping the A65 so I did.

Was worth it to me and I asked him to be sure that the controlling ACO in NY agreed as well and he said that he checked with them and they were ok with it.

In my case its done. Hope fully Terry agrees as well.

Sean, I don't have any pictures. There are larger spar bushing and a couple plates welded on the strut attachment on the wing. If you are ever on the west side of the state, I would be more then happy to show you my project.

I would love to know if that can be done.

Re: What are Taylorcrafts selling for nowadays?

Just to be clear it has been done in the past and filed in a 337 a number of years ago.

Since Terry owns the STC now maybe he holds a different view than Bob Harer. I do not know.

The airplane flies great, no issues with power or climb and also part 91 allows a 15% increase as I recall in GW in Alaska that is a lot more than 80 lbs

So it sort of makes sense to me that the GW would not be an issue.

Re: What are Taylorcrafts selling for nowadays?

You can buy the STC and do the fuel mods only and install a C85 and leave gross weight at 1200. I did it on one of my planes. There is an examiner in Traverse City who would do your check ride I think. His name is Bob Butterfield. I am a CFI-SP in the UP. I have a 90 hp tcraft on floats and another 85 hp bc12 d with 1280 gross, love them both. I also just rebuilt a J3 L4 Cub. It's fun, but the tcraft outclasses it. Good luck.

Re: What are Taylorcrafts selling for nowadays?

To my recollection, the 1280lb gross weight increase only applies if you do the structural mods AND install a C-85 on the short mount, but I am happy to be corrected. To go the whole hog to 1500lb, a longer mount (and cowls) is required on top of those other mods.

I won't divulge what I think about the fuel system mods.

                      [Thread drift:]
Interestingly, at the moment I am recovering an Auster made in the 1950's, that has a gross weight of 2650lbs (ouch) and the steel strut fittings and butt fittings on the wings appear very similar in thickness to the Taylorcraft from which it was designed (and there are no plates welded to the strut fittings). Mind you, the wooden spars are a bit thicker, as are the drag/antidrag wires.

And perhaps more interestingly, there are no diagonal (cross) tubes in the belly bays aft of the gear, but rather small corner triangular plates between lower longerons & cross tubes to support very thick & heavy floorboards that I assume form torsional resistance.

The whole thing weighs a ton!

I believe you are correct Rob. No gross weigh increase allowed without the 85. What engine does the Auster have? Gypsy?
