  • Need a bungee tool

I'm ready to install bungee cords and what I have is Piper tool and another tool that looks like a tire iron. I decided what I should use is the tool everyone agrees is best,T-Craft design, go figure.

Does anyone have one to lend, rent or sell? Plans to make one would be OK too.

    Thanks,
    Norm G

Don't even think of using the tire iron/bumper jack type tools, unless you want your heirs to add a sun roof before they sell your plane from the estate!

I have no idea what you could use a Piper tool for on a Taylorcraft bungee system. I guess you could loan it out to friends with Pipers. The Taylorcraft tools look great and they are well designed. I am going to have to buy one soon too. I will never be selling my plane so it's time to "own" the tool.

        Hank,
The tool is not a tire iron for a car, it,s a real bungee tool with a swivel end that fits on to the bungee support. The tool in in the shape of a tire iron almost like a J in shape. I maybe be a little nuts but not crazy.

That's what I figured, but I also just wiped a few beads of sweat from my fore head.

Just in case.... Hey, I worked for NASA, I saw LOTS of really smart people do some pretty dumb things. Some of those people were ME!

                Re: Need a bungee tool

OK, I broke down and made a bungee tool. I tried it out on the old set shock cords and it works great. Now for the next question what shock cord would be best for my 1941 BC12. Spruce calls out the 9090. Due to my size, 6ft and 230lbs should I be looking for a HD cord and if so which one. I have a new set of 1192 that I bought by mistake. Maybe I could use one 1193 and a 9090 per side. The 1193 will be a real bear to install because there 11/16 and really stiff. Anyway if I don't end up using the 1193 set I could sell them, real cheep, code red,red blue.

                Thanks,

                  Re: Need a bungee tool

                  Norm,

The first two numbers are the diameter in 16th of an inch. The second two are the length in inches. A 9090 would be 9/16" dia and 9 inches long. An 1193 would be 11/16" in diameter, and I believe 9.3 inches long. Rather than experiment with the size, and possibly get it wrong, I suggest using the correct size and adding HD to the end of the number. That is the heavy duty version. Unless someone can verify that a specific size, other than what is called for, will work you may not have the support you need. There is also an HDX version, which is even stronger than heavy duty. For my '46 BC12D it calls for a 9010HD, which is rated at 475lbs. The 9010HDX is rated for 700lbs, so it is a great deal heavier. I made the mistake of using all 9010HDX on mine and I will never do it again. It is too stiff. Next time I will use one HD and one HDX. For cords made in 2012, you should see red marks. If they have green, it is last years cord.

                    Richard,
I had no idea what the numbers stood for. Thank you for all that good information and you are right the 9090 is 9/16" and 9" long and the 1193 is 11/32" and 9.3" long, per the Spruce catalog.
