  • Tail brace wire straps

    Hi folks,
Prior to test fitting my tail brace wires I looked back at the newsletters (December 2000) and found drawings of the straps, wires, inserts, nipples, etc. The straps for the horizontal stabilizer have a part number of A-4009 while the straps for the vertical stabilizer are A-4008.
I have looked long and hard at the ones I have and do not see any difference. Are they different somehow?
    Thanks!

    Re: Tail brace wire straps

Jay, I looked at my BC12D and at a parts manual: Will try to send the page with the P/N's and Description.

    A-4001 2 Strap-Tie Rod to Bottom Fuselage
    A-4008 2 Strap-Tie Rod to Fin
    A-4009 4 Strap-Tie Rod to Stabilizer-Top & Bottom
    A-4002 8 Insert-Tie Rod Ends

Just looking at my setup, the 2 straps (p/n A-4001) that attach to the tangs on the lower longerons on the fuselage look like STRAIGHT teardrops that wrap around the inserts. The straps on the horizontal stabilizer(both top and bottom)(p/n A-4009) have the small end of their tear-drop shape BENT-OVER to match the required angles of the brace rods when under tension, and where the straps(p/n A-4008) on the vertical fin are bolted on, the "bend" in the teardrop matches the required angle at that location. Basically, there appear to be different bends required to match the final tension arrangements. The upper and middle straps really aren't too much different, but the 2 on the bottom of the fuselage don't have a bend...they are in a straight pull. Hope this helps and hope you can see the info from the parts book.

      Hi Dick,
I appreciate the detail and photos. All the straps I have match yours so I think I have the correct parts.
I expect all the straps on the vertical and horizontal stabilizers start out with the same shape and are bent on installation to conform to the wires.
      Thanks!

        Re: Tail brace wire straps

When I got replacement ones from Dorthy years ago they were all bent to the correct angles when they arrived. Seems like there was some small difference in the hole diameters on some of them (I think the stab ones). I remember that at least the surface side of the hole went OVER the tube coming out of the stab, then a washer was used to be sure the tabs were against the TUBE through the stab hinge line tube, not the bolt shank.

Ray, you may already have this, but I will post it in case anyone else may be interested. It relates to what Hank just mentioned.
