New prop

Well after my little run in with a Citabria I have to get a new prop. I had a metal on on there before but due to lack of funds I can only afford a wood prop. I have a Cont -65hp and wondering what size prop to buy from Sensenich. What is the best all around prop size to purchase? I don't fly much cross country trips, maybe to a fly in around 100 miles or so once or twice a year. I had a 76X42 wood Sensenich on my Aeronca 1941 Ca-65 Chief and it was good on that airplane.
Any advice would be grateful. looks like I will have to replace the old mags also but don't want any bumbs in the nice cowling I have.
Also looks like I will have to replace to Scott tailwheel also because it won't break pushing it backwards and sometime I get stuck doing donut in the middle of the runway trying to turn around Lol.
Looks like I am going to have to sell my Pitts S-1 projects to pay for all the items on my baby the Taylorcraft. Anyone wanting Pitts projects one has factory welded parts the other is damaged from a flip over in tall grass. Only one engine Lyc O-290 D2 obvious with a prop strike as it went over on it's back.

Back in the 60s when I was flying my first BC12D, it had a 72-42 Sesenich wood prop and it did just fine. It started to de-laminate so I got a metal prop which the plane had on it when I sold it. I kept the wood prop and if I ever get my 41 65CA Chief restored, I may get it fixed by Sensenich and use it. I have a metal prop for my BC12D that I am repairing now.
I could not see much difference in the performance of wood vs metal. Are you sure you had a 76" prop on your Chief? My Stinson prop is 76", but my T-craft and Chief props were/are 72"

For the A-65, 72-42 is the 'all around' prop. That is what I have. 72-44 is a cruise, (I hated it and took it off after I bought the airplane), and a 72-40 is a climb prop. You will lose around 10 mph in cruise with the wood. Mine is a Sensenich. They have sales sometimes so ask them when you call them. I also had my tips done in red, which very closely matched my plane.

Long and flat will help in climb, I would do a 74-42, but I fly at 4400 msl...Tim

Did you fly the cruise prop enough to get any data to compare to your current prop? Speed or climb vs power?

Nothing that I wrote down. Takeoff on grass was horrible, (2.600 feet). A little concerning two up. Extremely slow to get going. Cruise was maybe around 100-105 , or so. Off of concrete not a big problem, again, just slow getting going. Very slow in climb. When I put the 42 on it was amazing how different it was.

The BC12D 65 hp I sold recently had a sensinich wooden "climb" prop that didnt cut it. I bought a new McCauley metal 74/73 and it made a noticeable improvement in climb. Cruise was about the same but these little airplanes are for low and slow anyway so I was very satisfied. East Coast propeller, who spcd the prop took the woodie in trade. Is there a concensus of opinion out there that a metal prop will perform better than a wood prop even if both are same specs. I'm in market for a prop; This would be good info to know. Lee

I know from experience my 74-45 metal on my first BC-12 and L-2B outperformed my 72-42 wood hands-down. Let's see if there are any other opinions on this.

The a&p/I that had my T-Craft told me the metal prop was noticably better. I can not speak from experience. L

two weeks ago early morning very quiet air flew 56 mi trip 74/43 McCauley 2500 rpm over 20 mi 109 kts and will get off in 150 ft and climb 800 to 1000 ft per min at 60 mph with C85 -12 OH and 26 in bush wheels it seems to be just right this prop was on my A65 also it did well on it also good take off and good speeds 105/108 mph climb 500 ft/min I would not change it works good
