  • Clip wing Taylorcraft

This question is for information only , as i know there are a lot of knowledgeable members out there. How difficult is it to convert a standard category stock Taylorcraft into a clip wing, ? First I know it involves the FAA and a lot of paper work and it converts it to the experimental category. Has anyone ever just cliped the wings on a 65hp Taylorcraft, is it worth it ? does it require more hp to make one ? does the clip wing give it more air speed ? does it increase the stall speed? I know the clip wing makes a great aerobatic airplane , what about just a clip wing for cross county flying and plane fun?

It was my understanding at one time you could do all or parts of the Swick conversion and stay standard category, but the STC is not available any more. I also have a letter that says a Swick can be built as an experimental amateur built, but it is dated 1985. I also think you would want at least 85-100hp, and if you can keep it on a short mount it would be good. Speed for an airplane like that would be 110-115mph. stall speed is just a little faster, but not much. This is based on the clip wing in my avitar. Tom

I don't think you can get a Swick certified to standard catagory any more. You could talk to your FSDO and see if they would go for it. A Clip Wing with a 65HP would be a real dog. One thing that clipping the wing does is to kill the climb when loaded. I have clipped both T-crafts and several Cubs. The stall speed doesn't change that much but the climb rate when loaded is really affected-and that is with the larger engine. My Cubs were 85 to 90 hp and my T-craft was 118HP

How did the 118 hp Tcraft clip wing do what was the climb rate/cruise speed. I have a 21A and always wondered if it would make a good clip wing project. I know the 0320 would be better but I have the 0235. Mike

you should call Eric at Bully aero. He will fill you in. An 0200 clip wing turns a T-Craft into a real performer, much faster both level and in climb, and alot more fun to fly yet still lands in a rather docile way.JC

Mine was not a whole lot faster-about 125mph wide open. I had a climb prop on it so it climbed much better than stock. However, I could do an outside loop at 120. It was great for airshow and competition cause it would do a whole routine without having to break to gain altitude. I used to cruse at 110mph at 2400rpm Xcountry at 5.5gal/hour. The engine was a o235-L2C.

I could do all the inside and outside maneuvers and never pulled more than 4G or exceeded 125MPH. The plane is still on the west coast flying airshows.
