I have a great AI helping me with my t/craft project. I don't have a data plate. My AI says I may have to jump through some hoops with FAA. Anyone had any experience with this problem. Lee Nicklas

Re: Data Plate
www.barberaircraft.com link to
DATA PLATES:
Forrest Barber can issue them with FAA Authorization. Search on the forum for other information and sources.
E-mail me DIRECT.... [email protected]
NO you cannot have a blank ....
Send me a "letter of authorization" as outlined in the regulations about "lost or missing data plates." It is issued by the local FSDO or authority in your country...Simple matter. You may need a "conformance inspection." I ALWAYS ask you what happened to the original one...... it is the airplane , maybe it's out there flying around somewhere.
I have outlined this procedure many times.... any PMI or IA or A&P should know what to do. I have tried to explain that I need it ALL in one package,
1. Copy of letter of authorization to the owner or me as his representative, NOT the factory.
2. ATC #
3. N-Number
4. Serial # from paper work
5. Date of manufacture. If you don’t have it, I can look it up for you.
6. Copy of certificate of registration & method of payment to Barber Aircraft.
Send check, Visa or MC
Fee is $45.00. That is $10.00 for plate, $30.00 for doing it with original plates & stamps.
$5.00 S&H (two day) If yours is still lying here, e-mail me to see what is missing.
Keep it all together ..... THIS is in Newsletter too!!Taylorcraft Foundation, Inc

Re: Data Plate
This subject has been well addressed on this and many other forums. Forrest, you are correct you can issue these. But you are not the only person authorized. The requirement allowing the change of a data plate is in Part 45.13(d)(1). Paraphrasing, it says...The person maintaining the airplane (not the person making or selling data plates) may change a data plate as long as it acceptable to the FAA Administrator.... This applies to engines, airplanes, propellers... and yes FSDO is involved. But there is NOTHING that says you or I can't obtain a blank data plate and mark it for our own airplane. Granted, we can't mark just anything on there, it has to be acceptable to the FAA. Blank data plates are available from various sources.
Noel Allard has done this service for antiquers for many years. His company makes flawless reproduction top-quality ones. In fact, he has 17 different ones for Taylorcraft, including some of the placards as well. The one for mine is $30 (March '07 price list).
Anyone looking for blank data plates for almost any antique, you can check with Noel Allard at the following address

Re: Data Plate
Well that is not what the one in my 41 looks like (still haven't gotten back out to get a picture). Does anyone know if any blanks like AJs even exist out there and would Forrest stamp one of those instead of a replacement new version? Interesting that it shows "Taylor-Young", not "Taylorcraft". The company became "Taylor-Young" around March 20, 1937 when the management of the company was shaken up. By the end of June, 1939 company paperwork was showing "Taylorcraft Aviation Corporation" so I am not sure when the Taylor-Young corporation ceased to exist. Of course Taylorcraft was nothing if not "frugal", so there is no telling how long they would have continued to use the old data plates. I would guess until they ran out of them. There is a picture of a "Taylor-Young" plate stamped 3 29 40 in the Taylorcraft Story on page 88, so at least till the spring of 1940.
Anyone have a picture of a 41 plate? I know mine is all bare metal and if I remember right all of the printing is worn off and all that is left is the stamping. If anyone has unusual plates please lay a ruler or a coin next to it when you take the picture so we can scale them up. I will try and find someone to silkscreen them if we can get them stamped.
Hank
Hey Forrest! Is what I am suggesting even legal? I "think" it is just illegal for me to stamp one, not to make the plate, but I am not sure. Maybe I will "find" a box of "original" blanks at a flea market. ;-)

Re: Data Plate
Lon's April '39 BC-65 has a plate just like this one AJ has posted. -
WAIT.... I take that back. It does say Taylor-Young, but I believe it has the Max. Wt. listed on it. Now I need to re-check that.Terry Bowden, formerly TF # 351
