Had a chance recently to do some ski flying during the Iron Dog Race. This is an Alaska snowmachine race from Big Lake (near Wasilla) to Nome to Fairbanks. Riders race in teams of (2) and the winners cover over 2,000 miles in just under 36 hours of riding. Winners claim title to the world's longest and toughest snowmachine race and a first prize purse of $50,000.

Some friends and I flew out to the Shell Lake and Puntilla Lake check-points to watch the first teams pass through on their way up into the Alaska Range and Rainy Pass.

    Fun day of ski flying!

Hello 43121 (sorry if I don't know your name)

Do you know what, you Alaska Taylorcraft flyers are going to have to club together and buy me a ticket to Alaska.

First there's the Iditarod, and now there's the snowmobile equivalent. I know I'm missing something I need to do before I slip off this mortal coil.

Alaska is one of the two US States I've never managed to get to (the other being Hawaii).

On the subject of Nome Alaska, does anyone know Tom & Tammy Wagner, formerly of Denver CO who moved to Nome in about 1988 or thereabouts?

Rod, thank you for the visit a few minutes ago. Your Taylorcraft is every bit as nice as I thought it would be. Smells lke a new airplane...well I guess it is!
I look forward to doing some flying.

              Hi Rob,

Come on over the pond (or over the top) and visit us anytime. You'll just want to be carefull you don't refer to snowmachines as "snowmobiles" over here ... you'll sound too much like you are from the midwest!

              Blue skies,

              Rod Hanson
