  • Wing Assembly

I spent the day helping a local AI assemble a right wing for a BC12D that he had replaced both spars in due to a wing tip meeting with a hanger on start up.He had everything ready when I got there(wing was COMPLETELY apart)at 6am this morning and by 7pm we had all the ribs nailed in place and all the rivits back in the ribs. The only thing there was to finish when I left was reattach the leading edge and tighten the bolts on the wing tip bow.Not bad for a days work.My hand feels like it has the unstopable shakes from using the rivit gun almost non-stop all day.Hopefully he will get it covered and reinstalled by Monday or Tuesday so the guy can get on home.

    wing assembly trammeling

Crispy, I might have to rebuild a wing or two. It sounds like you rebuilt some prewar ribs. Any good books out there on rebuilding ribs and then trammeling the wings? I've only heard about trammeling here and don't even know what it means except in the broadest sense. I have broken wing spars on One wing and some corrosion on both wings. Any advice

      Need tip ribs

I am looking for some good pre war tip ribs if anybody has them. Forrest has a pair but says that they are in fair condition, probably not much better than the ones that I will be repairing.

Last night I cut up my leading edge material. It came in 12' sections so I cut it into pieces about 1" longer than the ones that came out of the plane (6 pieces, 4 sizes). The leftovers will become rib repair material. I am going to have to weld up a hand brake of some sorts to make the repair pieces. I can't figure out how to make them on a normal brake. The 2024 is a little harder to bend than my coke can template :-).

My plane is just a few newer than Billy's.

Dave, It would be great if we could find someplace to get the Prewar T-stock and the web material! It would be much simpler to repair built up ribs! If the whole bottom of the rib is corroded what option do I have . can I still rebuild the ribs? Is there some point at which a rib would be considered too far gone for rebuilding?

          Dave & Billy,
I don't know of any books, just trail and error.I'm looking at a project right now that has a lot of good pre war parts including a nice set of complete pre-war wings and a lot of extra pre-war ribs, parts, hardware, and fittings(I do know that the wings are in good shape, one spar is new and one has a splice because of a scuff, not a crack, they also have new leading and trailing edges).I have some RV parts & tooling that he wants plus $3500.00.I also need some of the fuslage hardware from it but I really can't afford the $3500 right now without taking a massive beating from my wife.I would go ahead and get it if I knew I could get most of my $3500 back pretty quick to save my hide from my better half.
If any of you would be interested in anything from this project please let me know what it is and I'll try to get some details for you on the parts that you want.
I also have a few post-war wing parts.

            RV-9 Parts

First time trying to post to the group. Hope this works.
I bought my 41 Taylorcraft from Bill Repucci:
and he is building an RV-9 now. Kevin Mays said he had some RV stuff in with the Taylorcraft parts he wanted. Bill is a great guy and may be interested in some of the RV stuff to help defray the costs. Give him a yell.

              wings

              Crispy
I have gotten more leads on wing and wing parts in the last week that this site has been running than in the two years prior I am interrested in any wings that don't need rebuilding, recover I can do! What do you figure the wings would cost? I hate to split up an airframe but a mans gotta do what a mans gotta do, as long as my bride says its OK Would you want to go Half-n-Half or do you have some other deal in mind?

                wings

                Billy,
I'm sure we could work something out without any trouble.I might ask for a little more than half of $3500 because I'm in east Ky and I will have to go to central Florida to get them. Can you pick them up in east Ky or would you want them delivered to the DC area?
These wings are supposed to be ready to cover. The seller said that he cleaned them up pretty good and they had no corrosion before or after he cleaned them.He replaced the leading and trailing edges on both wings(new). He also replaced one spar and put a splice on one other spar. The splice is to provide extra support to a dent(as he calls it)about and inch long and 1/16 of an inch deep in the wood on the spar.He said it looked like the dent had been there since the last recover job that was done in the mid 1960's.
He said other than needing to clean off a little dust from setting in his hanger that the wings are ready to cover.
If you want to know anything about them just let me know.I really need some of the fuslage parts but my wife will probably shoot me if I spend that much money this close to X-mas.If I can get most of my money back then she might let me live. This project has no paper work so I was planing on parting most of it out anyway, using only what I need and saving the rest for a future project.

                  Wing assembly

Sorry to interupt the thread but I am trying to come up with "instructions" or a site map for someone about the site. Some people find it hard to follow so I needed to see how to post so I could tell them.

                  THanks for you patience

                    prewar rib stock

About 5 years ago I ordered the rib capstrip 'T' stock and the 'W' bracing from Wag-Aero. They listed it for Piper but it is the same stuff.
Don't hesitate to repair that rib structure. I repaired every rib in some manner on my '41 Taylorcraft. Even to the point of building new root & tip ribs. Also some new nose ribs.

the 'W' shaped bridge work is simple. Gently grind the tail off the rivet then punch. Cut new stock to length. Rivet in place.
I used a squeeze rivet tool from Air Spruce. Made two sets of dies for this tool. One set to fit under the 'T' another to fit the 'w' grooves.

Rib cap stock is more complex. Basic idea is to cut out the bad piece, cut new stock three inches longer than needed. Open each end of the new stock sufficient to slip over the old 1-1/2 inches. Rivet the tail of the 'T' in the overlapped area at least four rivets per inch.
If the bent or broken cap problem is less than an inch in length, don't cut it out. Just wrap 2 inches of new stock around the cap and rivet the tail.
Curved rib caps strips are easy enough to recreate. Originally these were run through a beading tool to create the wavy tail which enables the stock to bend and conform to the airfoil shape.
There are hand tools available but they are too big for this small stock. I made a tool by building up thick jaws on some pliers and grinding out a form. Lots of squeezing to build an entire nose rib.
I also made a form to contain the nose rib while bending the stock and riveting the braces.
critical that all nose ribs have exactly the same shape & size. Takes very little mis-shape to cause problems putting on the leading edge. Small differences can be overcome with extra chafing tape on the rib cap.

Need to deal with corrosion first. Chemicals are available to etch out the corrosion, then it's necessary to apply an anodyzing solution to the bare aluminum.

                        Crispy Critter Run

No,the crispy critter run was a little before my time.My father made that run a few times though(I think). He and my wife gave that name to my 1946 BC12D project that I'm rebuilding. It was hit by lightning in 1970 and burned most of it to a crisp. It was not a justifiable project but seeing how my great grandfather bought it in 1952 and my grandfather and father learned to fly in it,I think it is well worth the efforts.I am almost ready to cover her.Hope to fly her early this summer.
