Re: Roller bering pulleys
Hi Chuck,
I didn't replace my pulleys because the roller bearing type pulleys I found at the local parts store weren't the right size. I didn't go looking very hard for replacements, I just cleaned up the old ones I had. I would like to change them out. Where did you get replacement pulleys? Do you have supplier / part numbers handy?

Re: Roller bering pulleys
Chuck,
Besides the obvious difficulties in getting to the back pulleys, were there any other problems that really stuck out you can relate to me here? Pulley sizing, size of the cable groove, etc.? I am contemplating the cost along with the hassle if there are a lot of little problems, or a couple of big problems, with installing these. Any detailed comments on your installation would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!Cheers,
Marty

Re: Roller bering pulleys
Marty and tribe the job of changing the pulleys went very well the pulleys fit grate the only thing i tried to avoid was the turn buckles but i did have to let them out as the cables sit higher in the new pulleys. as far as hardware my AI and i talked and he said it was ok to use self locking nuts as there is no rotation on the bolt because the center race is larger then the pulley so you tighten the bolt to hold the race from turning so no more cotter pins the only two pulleys that were the worst were the two at the top corner of the panel they are the small size as far as the cotter pins i just sheared them off as they are small and with two open end wrenches they brake easy if you want i can do an inventory of hardware so to help with ordering what you need marty the whole job only took me about 3 or 4 hrs to do and NO bad hassel at all and the controls are so smooth and easy to moveLast edited by cvavon; 03-08-2012, 09:54.1940 BLT/BC65 N26658 SER#2000

Re: Roller bering pulleys
Chuck and anyone else interested. Maybe your pre-war is different from post-war but my '46 takes 8 of the 3" and 8 of the 1.75". Check for your particular application before ordering. Thankfully my order hadn't left yet and I could adjust the order.Cheers,
Marty

Re: Roller bering pulleys
I did not pull the right side cover yet but it was two big and one small.
Small ones: 2 each side lower door posts next to instrument panel, 2 behind your head, 2 on the H bar. One each side behind lower door sill covers, (2 total). (Single on the left and single on the right stacked with the two big ones).
Large ones: 2 upper door posts, 4 on the H bar and two behind lower right door sill cover, (the three stacked together).Last edited by M Towsley; 03-09-2012, 20:17.Cheers,

Re: Roller bering pulleys
Chuck,
You were right, they were the larger pulleys up and behind the headliner. I went to finish out the pulley install yesterday and realized I would have to clip the wires holding in the back part of the headliner. Once I did that I could plainly see they were the larger pulleys, not the smaller ones as I thought they were. When I was using a mirror and flashlight they looked like the smaller ones.
I am still sore from contorting around trying to get the old pulleys out and the new ones in. There is definitely a technique to doing those back ones. Doug has two larger pulleys on the way to me now so I can finish up. I just used the two large ones that go on the lower H-Bar area. Those are easy to install.Cheers,
Marty

Re: Roller bering pulleys
I have been following this thread for quite a while with interest in making the modification. I happen to be in Arizona at Mesa Gateway airport for fires in the area. Had some time to do a little surfing and saw (again) the ad in Barnstormers for the bearing pulleys. Noticed that the location was Gilbert, AZ. That is where the hotel we are staying at is located. Called Doug up and asked if I could just come by and pick up my order. He took my information and as I was checking in at the hotel he walked up and handed me a bag full of new pulleys. What service!! Now I just need to find some time to install them!? Thank you Chuck for the list of hardware. That should be at home by the time I get back. Can't wait to try them out!
