Resurrection of N27432

I guess it's time to start my build thread. It probably won't be that exciting to follow because the thread won't get updated super often since the work is going slowly. Anyway, 27432 is a 1940 BC-65 that hasn't flown since the late 80s and has been moved multiple times since it was torn apart, so I'm sure I'm going to have lots of questions on missing/unknown parts. I plan on doing the following mods:
-C-85 stroker on a short mount
-Luscombe exhaust
-1285 gross weight
-Cleveland wheels and brakes
-8.50 tires (I would love 29" air$treak$ but my wallet disagrees)
-Scott 3200
-Patrol doors
-Skylight
-B&C alt/starter because they will fit a short mount without modifying the firewall
-Second wing tank

I'm still trying to get the c-85 and gross increase approved because BC-65s aren't included in Terry's STC. I spoke with the local FSDO the other day and they were optimistic, so I am hoping I can get the approval soon since I've already started building the c-85.
You can see that this is a big project, and I'm starting to wonder what in the hell I've gotten myself into.
The shelves are full of tcraft parts.


My supervisor is making sure I don't screw anything up during one of the projects many moves.



I started tearing apart the right wing over the weekend and I thought that would be an easy enough project, but I was wrong! Those old screws in the leading/trailing edges didn't want to come out.

I need two aileron bay ribs, tip rib, butt rib, and a new leading edge. I am still trying to pick my jaw off the floor after seeing what univair wants for a butt rib kit I'm hoping the new spars will be here next week so I can start building them up.

Hopefully you can see what's going on with these crappy cell phone pictures. I'd buy a nicer camera but that would infringe on my airplane budget

Hey AJ,

I am not sure if the problem is with your post or on my end, but when I tried to open the pictures you posted I got a message from Photo Bucket saying the action I am trying to take has failed. It is no big deal. I can get a pretty good idea of what you have from the small pictures. It sounds like you are at about the same place I am with my project plane. I haven't even opened up the wings on it though. I am well along on the fuselage and hope to be glueing fabric late this summer. One good thing about being able to post pictures that show some detail is everyone here on the forum can better understand what problem you may be having and best how to advise you on a solution. Keep us posted on your progress!

Thanks for starting the new thread AJ. It will be exciting to see your project succeed! The photobucket pictures worked fine for me. I was able to view the whole album Of 15 pictures.

The pictures worked for for me, but opened in a new window - Firefox on Linux...
As to the tough-to-remove screws, I had the same problem taking apart my SN7700 wing for its rebuild. I found that a judicious use of a heat gun tended to loosen them up enough to work them out.

Sorry for the picture problems. I recently got the photobucket app on my iPad and tried posting them through that. I assumed the thumbnail would expand without opening a new tab. I'll try reposting them when I get home in a couple days.

Rod, your airplane was pretty much how I envisioned building mine, except yours is nicer. I don't think I can compete with that thing!

I changed the photos to their original size. Hopefully they aren't too large now.

I bead blasted some of the compression struts as well as the strut attach fittings tonight. I plan on getting the rest of the wing parts prepped for paint over the weekend.



Has anyone purchased leading edge material from univair? I'm getting ready to buy some, but I haven't found anyone that has used them on taylorcrafts. I'm also thinking about their trailing edge. Have any of you guys made your own trailing edge?

I bought a coil of 0.020" aluminum for the leading edge from AirParts:

go pull the paperwork on 53500. we got gross weight approval and 0-200 install on my bf-12-65 when I had a DER do a new permanent airworthiness. We had the original Gilberti stc.

Looks good AJ.... I had no problem seeing pics you posted. Looks like you are making progress since the plane left Ogden-Hinckley, I'm slowly working on the F-19.

I have a small update. I just bought my 0-200 crankshaft/rods for my c-85, and I finally got my spars. Anyone want to build these spars for me?
