  • 1980 F21 paint color

Tried the search and couldn't find anything for the later models listed. Anyone know the original color names for the beige / red trim color scheme? Not that they'll match any of the old dope, but may as well start there. Thanks.

The early colors were Taylorcraft Ivory and Metallic Maroon (around WW-II). I know Jim and Dondi at at Aircraft Tech Support (Poly Fiber Distributor) at 877-877-3334. They have those two colors and they look great together. They are also really good at custom mixing for you. The names of colors changed a lot over the year but one thing I can say for sure, Diana Cream is NOT the beige that was ever used on Taylorcrafts.

I don't have any connection to Jim and Dondi except as a VERY satisfied customer.

Daytona White was used a lot on the late tcrafts. My F19 (SN F-147) was shipped Daytona White and Bahama Blue. The blue was changed to Cruiser Orange shortly after it was delivered.

We are restoring it now, and using Polyfiber products. The Polyfiber Daytona White is much different than the Randolph Daytona White. The Polyfiber is more of a cream color.

Daytona white is much lighter than Taylorcraft Ivory. REALLY nice white that isn't "snow" white (I don't think "snow white" looks that good on a Taylorcraft). Right after the War Taylorcraft also used a color called Nieuport Blue that I think was also called Cessna Blue (by that "other" company). Nieuport Blue and Taylorcraft Ivory were the original colors on my 45 BC-12.

I was NOT impressed by Randolph. They seemed ready to tell me the colors I needed were the ones they had in stock. They were the ones who told me Diana Cream was Taylorcraft Ivory and they KNEW that was right because "they were the only supplier to Taylorcraft since before WW-II (NOT true) and they "NEVER" change their color mix". I had two sets of their color chips in front of me and neither matched each other or the sample of Diana Cream they sent me. NONE of them matched the color on the crevices of the tubes in my plane.

I sent Jim and Dondie an envelope with some ancient chips of paint (from 3 different planes) and they matched it exactly (at least according to those with better color vision than mine).

I am sure you already know it but Randolph was bought by Polyfiber a few years ago and they are now producing the paints, dopes, etc., so I doubt if the colors are the same as Randolph was supplying back in the 40s. Also, for those not aware, Polyfiber fabric and Ceconite are also exactly the same produced on the same lines with the only change being the printing on the selvidge edge branding it Polyfiber or Ceconite. That info I got from the Poly Fiber folks at Oshkosh a few years ago when I was helping in their fabric workshop.
My first BC12D was Diana Creme and a metalic blue. It was not the original finish, but I was told that it was an original color scheme, but that was almost 50 years ago.
But the original question on this thread was about the original colors on the F21. I would think Forrest would have that info.

I can’t tell you what colors were used when yours was built my 1983 F21A was red with white stripes. In 2005 it was repainted in white with red stripes 180 degrees out from the original paint scheme. The logs report this paint as Glacier White #117 and Red #190 from Aircraft Spruce paint card #50. I like the color combo good luck finding what you need. Mike
