Alaska Tribe...anyone still out there...or did we all blow away in the wind?
We finally got power back after about 2 1/2 days. We ran backup gensets in 3 houses. The linemen crews earned their money on this one. Dick

Not quite as bad as you, Dick...but we're having some winter down here too all of a sudden. Last week we got 18" of snow overnight, then it went down to -18 for a couple nights...Yesteday it blew but was in the high 30's..almost a chinook! Today another foot of white so far and it's about 5 above.... guess summer's about done.

Dave, We are headed out for a graveside service...Temp. is -3 degree F.! We once celebrated a wedding with the family whose mother we are laying to rest...a volcano had just erupted and everyone at the wedding piled their shoes inside the church door and walked in on rolled-out butcher paper...to keep from tracking ash inside...we had a great celebration! Alaska is a kick! Come up and check it out. Dick

"I'm so far behind, I think I'm ahead (and that crazy bug) "

John, your tag line is great! I have several finger prints now on my monitor from trying to smash that little bug wiggling around at the end! How did you do that? I thought it was inside the screen until I moved to another page and the bug was gone.

By the way, its much better weather the last couple days. About -15 yesterday morning, but no wind. I may actually push out of the hangar and do some flying today.

As far as the tag line... it's the truth!!!

Lance, I measured the ice here in front of the house at about 11 inches this afternoon. Dick

                  Re: Alaska Wx

Going up to Anchorage on December 20 to visit with my older brother Maynard and his wife. I want to see his new place near Wasilla also. My part of Pennsylvania is normally more than cold enough for me, I can't believe I'm going up to Alaska in the winter! I hope it won't be too bitter. I need some relatives in Florida! Maynard was the first brother to own a Taylorcraft, back in the 60's; he doesn't own an airplane any more and hasn't flown for quite a few years now. I got my first Taylorcraft in the 70's, and younger brother got one in the '80's, and we still have them. Our dad owned and flew Taylorcrafts back in the 30's, never went back to flying after the war ended, raising a new family, etc. I think we all grew up thinking "Airplane" and "Taylorcraft" were synonyms, as we listened to Dad and our uncle and their old buddies sitting around talking over a beer.

Almost all our snow is gone now. It's been in the 40's for a few days and nights and a warm breeze. Like they say, if you don't like the wx here, just wait a bit...it's gonna change!

Anchorage isn't terribly cold really. It's cool for sure, but maritime you know? If you have time, take the train out to Fairbanks. If you're lucky you'll get to experience real cold there. The train trip is fun and not terribly expensive. It passes right by Denali National Park. The train cars have an upper deck observation area with huge windows. If you stay overnight stay at Captain Bartletts downtown Fairbanks. Crappy rooms, edible food, and interesting night life. Alaska Airline crews overnight there.
“Airplanes tend to fly better over gross than they do out of gas, but I’m just speculating.”

Skip Capt. Bartletts, go to the Princess or Pike's. Been to both, both are 4 stars. Both are on the river and you can watch the locals race their snow machines on the ice (snowmobiles for you lower 48 types). If you are lucky, they will have the ice statues up and maybe a few sled dog races on the weekend. Check out the Milepost of Alaska. It has the best tourist info you can get for the state. Tells you just about every trashcan long the roads....I get one every year I am up there. One of the better buffet's you can get is at the local Fred Meyer's on Diamond, the one in Wasilla, and the either one in Fairbanks . I perfered it to most of the restruants, fair prices and could do shopping at the same time. The local Safeway stores have good Chinese food.

When in Anchorage, get breakfast at the White Spot Cafe, 4th and A. Palmer has a good restraunt right down town called the Valley Hotel...good food and prices, on the way into Palmer, taking the Glen Highway is the Colony Kitchen. Wasilla has the family restraunt, on the Parks highway on the west side of town, on the Knik Goose Bay road, there is a great but spendy restraunt called Settlers Bay Lodge. If you have any more questions, give me a shout. Tim
