  • Countersinking the rivets - brake lining

    I have my lining, rivets, drills, clamps, and riveting tool; what I don't have is an official countersinking tool

    Any reason I shouldn't use a 5/16"drill?
    I know it will leave a shallow 'V" at the bottom (corresponding to the drill point), vice a countersink which will leave a flat hole bottom - Mike

    Mike, a well sharpened 5/16" Brad Point drill worked well for me. As usual, you might have to manicure the 'tips' to leave a truly flat bottomed hole. Jerry.

      Ultimately it depends on the shape of your rivets.

      Most copper brake-lining rivets are flat on the underside, indicative of needing a counterbore (rather than a countersink).

      If your rivets are tapered on the underside (unlikely) then a matching countersink will do.

      If not, and you have flat underside rivets, then you need a counterboring tool (you can make one by hand-grinding a drill bit, so ending up with a counterbore tool with a pilot bit to ensure concentricity with the drilled through-hole).

        5/16th wood boring bit, flat bottom , used for countersinking. Touch her up on the stone once in a while....
