  • Suggestion for: "Our own Register"

This is for the forum administrators discretion but wouldn't it be nice to have a seperate forum heading, uncluttered by comments etc. which will serve as the Taylorcraft register.

There can be a few rules to post on that forum, for instance I would suggest that the heading of each post should be the Serial number and then the model. This will make it easier to search for a specific aircraft and maybe to see what happened to your aircraft that was sold years ago. The content of the post should then contain.

    Aircraft Model:
    Year of manufacture:
    Registration number:
    Serial number:
Total airframe hours: (this will obviously be at the time of the post)
And then of cource a picture of the aircraft or a few pictures with a date as the specific aircraft changed it colours over the years

Maybe a little bit of history if the owner so wishes (Crispy Critter comes to mind)

I got the idea from another forum, but we can adapt it to suit. This is what they have done. http://www.avcom.co.za/phpBB3/viewforum.php?f=182

Good idea, bad idea, just putting it out there.

Re: Suggestion for: "Our own Register"

I recently suggested something similar and it would be great to combine with this. If the current owner is restoring the plane he could control thread access and use it to document the restoration. If people wanted to post historic information (old photos of the plane in prior lives or make comments about the work being done) those would be made on the regular threads and the owner could pick them up and forward them to his planes thread.
The value of the thread would be reduced if it became a site for debates or off topic conversations about all the other fun stuff we do. I like the idea of a thread on THE PLANE and it's history, even as the next chapter of that history is being created.
If one of us just put our plane in having open comments about it after the basic data wouldn't be a problem, but while it is being rebuilt I think the owner/restorer should control access to keep the thread clean.

I have one to start gathering info on (NC-43196, my 45 that is awaiting rebuild) and NC-36296 (my 41 that I am hoping will have the wings put back on THIS WEEKEND!!!)

Great idea, might be difficult to control from extraneous comments. Not sure how that would work. I could see how someone would want to ask questions about something particular instead of using a PM to ask.

Just like this: Hey, Ryan. I see you have the wings bolted on in the proper places. Looks good!
          Cheers,

Re: Suggestion for: "Our own Register"

I was just thinking the thread could just be locked to all but the planes owner or restorer so they could report what was happening. If you had a comment or question you simply ask on the open threads. If it is something useful to the restorers narrative, like someone noticing that something is wrong or a better way to do something, the aircraft thread could be updated by the owner forwarding that comment to his thread.
They have something similar on a WW-I replica group I read, but the build threads tend to get hi-jacked by conversations that are entertaining and even informative, but have little to do with the actual restoration or build. When you go back to read through the actual "build" there is a lot of unrelated chatter that makes it less useful as a research or historic resource. It is entertaining, but cluttered.
There would always be the open threads for the other "chatter and discussion".
I would just really love to be able to look at a whole thread on how one of the really good restorers did a plane. Even better, I would like to have a record like that on my 45 and Josh's plane. It is a bit too late for my 41.

Re: Suggestion for: "Our own Register"

I have always wanted to put up my own little web site that shows the work, planes, details, etc. on everything I'm doing but I am not that computer smart and would rather be working in the shop, flying, or spending time with family & friends rather then learning how to and maintaining a web site. Maybe that's a little bit of laziness on my part but what else can I say, lol. I would like to have one site that I can have seperate links.....for example, one link will show Crispy Critters story, progress, and detailed pics with description in step by step detail for everyone to see. Another link would have Dad's ragwing 170 in the same manner. Another link for parts, projects, and for sale type stuff(like a classified)and maybe have that link set up for friends to also advertise on. Something I could easily add any extra links for other projects and/or work being done for all to see. Like this week I just fabricated and installed a front hole cover for my starduster too,not that big of a deal to me but for some folks it would be nice to have a reference where they can look something like that up to help them if they want to do the same thing. Or last week I assembled a Bellance Cruisair 14-13-2 and I took quite a few pics of that. I know this is a little off from what you guys are talking about but I just thought I would share my idea. I am not very computer smart and honestly do not want to be as smart as some simply because I feel my time is more useful in other places doing other things. Maybe someone on here has some ideas or would want to help out or help set it up just to help put the info out there. I always try to keep detail pics of everything I do simply so I'll have some record of it later and i can always go back and say....so that's how I did that, lol. The site would need to be very easy for me to update and even easier for folks to navigate. I've been on some web sites that were cram-packed with some awsome info if you could figure out how to get through them, and find the same thing twice without mass confussion or an hour searching. Anyway, just something that's been on my mind.

Re: Suggestion for: "Our own Register"

I think what Keven is talking about is very close to what I am talking about, just for Taylorcrafts, not all planes. The idea of a site for lots of different planes is a good one since then we could have a section for each type with threads for specific aircraft. What I wanted was something like a homebuilt on line build log, just for restorations and repairs. That was why I wanted one thread per plane for the owner/restorer ONLY where he could put what he did today, and a second "open" thread for comments. If a comment looked relevant to what was going on (like if Keven pointed out I had put the wheels on up-side-down) I would forward that post to the owner thread. Years later the owner/restorer thread would be a clear chronology of the rebuild without the fun stuff about the fly-in that weekend or the trip for parts. Those things would be in the open thread.
This kind of thing really IS a tiny effort for the computer literate in the tribe, but for those of us who still have a slide rule it is beyond our comprehension. If someone sets it up, we WILL use it!

I like that idea Hank but I was talking about just wanting to set up a web site of my own for all to view and be able to see what I'm doing and how I'm doing it. Detailed links on each airplane and/or each job. Not only will folks be able to use it for reference, ideas, and how too's but I can also use it as a log history of my work.

                      Hi Bob

It would be great if you can create somthing like this, even better if is without effort

Seems that there is quite a few people that will make use of it

                      Thanks

Re: Suggestion for: "Our own Register"

I gather that what Zak would like is just a quick reference for Taylorcrafts on the forum. I would be nice to see other members planes, and would also provide a quick search for Nnumbers that would bring up a photo and some recent history. I think I will start it as Bob said. If he wants to lock delete it, change no problem.
