  • Another Central Texas Taylorcraft Day at Deer Pasture Airfield

In Central Texas, if you don't keep an airstrip trimmed regularly, they tend to accumulate sprouting (and thorny) mesquite trees and armadillo holes. Also, hangars tend to be a magnet for old furniture, tractors, cars, lumber, equipment, sawdust, tumbleweeds, dirt, and all sorts of things that clutter up the floorspace. But lately, my brother Eddie and I are slowly gaining momentum toward having Deer Pasture Airfield (69TE) back to active status. We have been cleaning up the airstrip and hangar... a really big job. It has been about 5 years since we had anyone land there.

So, this past weekend, it was really nice to have our Taylorcraft friends, Doc and Mark fly-in to lend a hand. There were also two outsiders (non-Tcrafters) who flew in a Luscombe 8F and a Cessna 150 spam can.

The day was good all around. We got started cleaning on the Hangar around sun-up. Then we noticed a darkening sky like we haven't seen in over a month. Texas has been so HOT and DRY, it was a surprise to have a rain shower come through at about 7:00 am. I texted Mark and Doc that they might need to check weather. I heard from Mark around 8:15 that they had enough visibility and were about to head on up.

They arrived a bit after 9:30. By then, Eddie and I were already tuckered out. But having 4 airplanes with 5 helpers drop in gave us a new boost of energy. The guys gave us a hand with the Hangar cleaning and then started working on airplanes. My two sweet daughters spent the morning cleaning up the bathroom and the kitchen areas and had us a lunch of sandwiches laid out by mid-day. The rains came back off-and on all morning and early afternoon, giving us a much appreciated break from the 100F + temperatures as we have seen for more than a month now. The skies cleared and the temperatures started back up into the high 90's. So the guys got started back home to Bulverde by about 4:30.

Again, Thanks Doc, Mark, Michael (Mark's grandson), Bob, and Frank. I sure appreciate you folks who are not afraid of hard work and who are so willing to help a friend. In return, I hope we can have some more good Taylorcraft times at Deer Pasture Airfield in the future.

        Robert,
This is my Dad & Mom's airfield and Hangar. My Brother and I both have been tied up with life happenings.. Dad passed away this past February after several year's illnesses and Mom is in mediocre health, requiring a lot of our time. We also have kids of our own and businesses to run. Airplanes and Airfield work have taken a back seat for the past few years. There is much to keeping it and the family land up. But finally this year, we have been making a concerted effort to improve things around the place.

N95598 back in the air!! Another fun day at Deer Pasture Airfield.

Well... it has been a long time, but finally worked off the last of the squawks Saturday on N95598 with the help of Taylorcraft Friends Mark Julicher and Mike Rice. The long list of discrepancies (including changing the prop to a 1A90-7443) was finally complete. Ground run revealed just what I had hoped... the static RPM with the 7443 prop was 2140+ RPM. At last, we came to the point where there was nothing left to do but GO FLY. Initial takeoff run was so sweet and climb-out even sweeter... OAT was around 90F. So pleased with the prop performance. No words can describe the relief I felt.

Thanks goes to Mark Julicher, Doc Hecker, Buell Powell, Mike Rice, Eddie Bowden, A.J. Frisbee, Bob, Frank, and my wife Leann and our girls for helping get back in the air.

Here are some photos taken by Mike Rice. We are so dry still here in TX... you'll note the dead sod on the airfield. The yellow/black bird is N95598... and the cream/red bird is Mark Julicher as he blasted off for home. After Mark left, I had a great time getting to know Mike better and when he decided to climb back in his truck to head home, he gave me a prop. I had a great flight for about an hour... enjoyed slow flying.. and other air work... very spiritual time with me the airplane and God's beautiful sunset!!

Hey, congrats Terry! Always nice to hear of another Taylorcraft taking to the air.

We are just now starting to get rain up here in the Midwest. It was a dry and unseasonably hot summer here, but no where near like you guys have had.
                          Cheers,
                          Marty

Sitting here back at school (in Texas) missing my Taylorcraft now! Looks like a fun way to beat the heat. I like the yellow/black paint job too.
On another note, I don't think hyd. brakes are required, I think they just have to hold for a run up. I was going to try and get some approved on mine, but we finally got them adjusted to where I can get down and stopped in about 300', sometimes less. Was thinking of flying Miss T down next year to have a little fun on the weekends, and when homework is light (yah right, who am I kidding).
