          Re: Airworthiness Certificate

The FAA decided that since Oklahoma City lost the entire packet of paperwork sent in when my airplane was returned to standard airworthiness 11 years ago, they were going to revoke my airworthiness certificate and make me do a conformity inspection to get a new one... because I did not have a copy of the airworthiness application, only the actual certificate itself! (My fault - I did the stupid move of asking why the aircraft registry showed my plane as experimental, when I had the logbook signoff and airworthiness proving it is and has been standard category, instead of blowing off the FAA's mistake.)

Two inspectors spent three hours combing through my paperwork and grumbling over every single change from stock, and upon inspecting my plane, handed a laundry list of things that needed to be fixed before they'd issue a new airworthiness certificate, including "that bolt is too long." and "Your shoulder harnesses were installed according to best practices at the time of installation, but I want them re-installed according to current best practices."

They came back four days later, spent another hour combing through my paperwork and getting into, ahem, discussions with my IA (politest arguing I've ever seen), and finally signed the paperwork. My shoulder harnesses stayed right where they were, thank you, because that is the best way to install them according to airframe.

I think mine probably so annoying because I'd pointed out the FAA messing up; most folks seem to have an easier time of it.
