    Howdy Tribe!!

Well, yesterday was the day. N39203 left the ground and performed to the highest of my expectations. My wife said that she hadn't seen me smile this much since the birth of our first daughter. Starting in July of 2003 I figured that a max of 90 days should do it. Yea, right. It has been a struggle but I'm there! The conversion to the model 19 was a b*#%* even with much experienced help but after the taxi tests and with the first flight, I knew I made the right decision. The 85-12F underwent a major. I did the main case, the accessory case and did the 0200 stroker conversion and added 4, count 'em folks, 4 new mileneum barrels, a new MA-3SPA Precision carb(10-4240), the 0200 crank, pisitons and rods are all new. All of the accessorys are yellow tagged and I replaced the harness and plugs. The mags are Bendix an are dual impulse. I'm swinging a Y'tagged McCauley 7146 metal prop. The first flight(with all of 2 hrs on the engine) was FANTASTIC!!! Off the ground in a little less than 350' with 6 gal of fuel, a 175lb pilot and a 200lb A&P with the OAT @ 92deg and a 5 K headwind. Even with the new engine only cranking out 2375 rpm she climbed @ 700+ ft/min. After 4 trips around the pattern, we stopped-installed the anti-servo tab on the rudder and topped off the header and both wing tanks. With full fuel and the same pilot and pass. we were off the ground in about 500' and still climbed at about 650 fpm. THANK YA JESUS.

I couldn't have done it without the help that I rec. from some great folks on this site. Especially Bob Lees and yellow duck.( By the way, duck I borrowed your paint scheme from your original) and for those that are asking about hyd. brakes-you don't need them!!! The schinn brakes, when properly adjusted, will hold '03 all of the way to 2500 rpm and perform flawlessly. thank ya, thank ya thank ya Bob.

I'm going to attempt to attach some photos but with my computer skills I'll probably call in an air strike on my house or have smokers on short final to my drive way.

If anyone has any ?'s about the Harer conversion please ask and I will do my best to help.

        Paul:

Mind if I give you a call one of these days about your project. I am doing the same model 19 upgrade and O-200 crank mods on my project, Tami T-Craft.

Sorry, your pictures still aren't coming through..........

Congraduations! It's got to be a great feeling to get her done!

Give me a call anytime. If I can be of any assistance at all, I would welcome the opportunity. I have a computer guru comming in a day or two to download the photos. He said,"It's no biggie! My 8 yr old can do it." Yeah, right! I plan this fall to redo the interior and the dash and get my wheel pants cleaned up and installed.

In addition, I want to add a Braackett air filter but I can't locate the STC holder. If you or anyone else in the tribe has any suggestions I would appreciate some direction. My A&P says that the existing filter(one with the cloth insert that you clean and reuse) should be replaced. The new replacement filter is about $75.00+. Too much!

I can generally be reached @ 405-348-6643 during the day and @405-348-1261 after 7:00 pm CST.

            Paul,

I got a Brackett Air Filter (from Wag Aero) a couple of years ago to replace the old filter my I.A. said needed to go. It came with the STC.

                Brackett Air filter

                Hey Mike,

Thanks much for the info. I just ordered same from Wag Aero. I hope to have by this comming Monday. Interestingly enough, my A&P said the same about the existing filter! He seems to think that the filter is one reason that I am about 75 rpms shy of the 2575.

Paul, sorry no pictures. But I am interested in time it took and what all did you do. Also about how much money did it cost?

                      Time & money

                      Lee & Tribe,

Sorry about the pics! I've got the guru working on it!
Lee, about the time & money. The big thing in a restoration is having all the parts! If you've got everything-you have the job half done. The problems arise when you decide to, not only restore, modify. The project I purchased was complete, including the engine. The engine log showed only 377 hrs since major and the seller said that he had flown the acft with that engine. He was a lying SOB. The engine overhaul with the o200 stroker conversion included a new 0200 crank, 4 new Milenium barrels with new 0200 pistons and rods. The cam was re-ground and all internal steel was magnafluxed. I put in new oil pump gears, new hydrolics and bearings and replaced all of the hardware with new. The starter, generator and mags were all yellow tagged. In addition, Divco did the main case and Drake aeromotive did the accessory case. I did most of the labor under the supervision of my A&P. That cost was a little over $8900.00 A new motor mount was $740.00 and an additional aux tank was $450.00. The labor for the welding and fabrication, and helping with the fabric recover was just over $4500. including the fabric & dope. All of the hardware, pulleys & cable came with the project which was $14K( It also included all new glass, new gascolator and new voltage regulator.) I also added a Brackett airfilter and a spin-on oil filter. By the way, I also had the metal prop overhauled. In addition, I had to purchase all new engine control cables since I moved everything 4" forward with the new engine mount. Oh, I almost forgot about the NEW Precision carb. MP-3SA(model 10-4240)---$1650.00 I also added a Val Com 760 radio and a Narco T50 transp with an 850 encoder. The were yellow tagged from ebay about $1100. I also added an AK450 elt @$190.00. I did the paint job myself with acrylic enamel and I probably spent around another $1500. in misc malarky. I'm redoing the interior and that will probably cost around another $4-500. In round #'s I spent about 24-25K for a brand new 1945 airplane. As far as time, I took del of the wreckage in July of 2003 and spent at a minimum of 3 hrs per day almost every day since. But now, all of the 337's are filed and all of the paper work is done and the aircraft and the records are current, complete and up to date. It was a lot of money, time and work-but God, I do love to fly this critter. I do need to get a new cowl(both upper and lower) The Harer stc calls for adding 4" to the existing cowling-that don't work with s$#@&
It's ok from a distance but up close it ain't mo'better. If you have any ?'s give me a shout and I'll do my best to answer same. I am going to try to get to your part of the country before the year is up and will drop in and say Howdy.
                      Best Regards

                              Uh-oh.

Paul, it looks like the program that this BB uses does not like Bitmaps (bmp) so try "save as" a jpg (using your favourite imaging editing software.

                              Then post that.
