  • Glare shield attach fasteners

Looks like I will be ready to attach the glare shield to the new instrument panel on the 41 tomorrow except I have hit a minor problem. The panel drawing shows there are 7 fasteners holding the aft edge of the glare shield to the panel edge with screws and Tinner (speed nuts). I found out Tinner nuts are now called Tinnerman nuts and even have an old fastener catalog, but the drawing has a fold right through the fastener part number! It "looks" like the nut is a 0400-165 Speed Nut (Tinner) and the screw looks like 5182-6-S4 RD HD Screw (or maybe S18Z-6??4). So far I haven't found anything in any catalog that matches even close to the numbers.
Does anyone know what the current part number is for the original type fastener. If you are going to do it, why not do it back to original?

Yea, I have the old catalogs and 43.13. The Spring Nuts are actually Tinnerman Nuts and from the drawing they look like the nutplate type with one or two small rivets. The problem is I don't know what size screws and what style heads to use. I know from old photos they were slot head and they look like they might be low profile Truss Head (AN-526?) or low profile washer head (AN-525?) but you just can't tell for sure or what size from a photo.
Anyone have the original screws or a copy of the drawing that can be read? I don't mind using a Clip or Spring nut since it doesn't show, but I would like to get the right screw.

I also finally got up into the headlinner and found the welded tubes for the Sissy Straps (Strap hangers at the top front of the door). Anyone have a picture of what the fitting between the bolt and fabric strap looks like?

        Hank,
My '41 DeLuxe (NC29804) assist straps were attached with an AN3 bolt through the strap and a modified AN970-3 washer (trimmed to 3/8" or so wide located under the head to keep it from pulling through the strap. BTW-I bought the airplane in 1970 and was still VERY original in that it had only been recovered one time in the late '50s.

Any chance you could take a picture. My problem is I doubt they just punched a hole in the strap material and ran the bolt through. I have the bolt, I can sew up the strap, What goes in between?

            Hank,

Did you find out what screws were used?
            Cheers,

              Marty,
What I found doesn't help much. An old Taylorcraft panel assembly drawing has part numbers but the current catalogs don't show the numbers. I dug out a really old fastener catalog (July 91, scary to think 1991 is really old now isn't it) but even it doesn't show the numbers.
The Tinnerman nuts were listed as 0400-165 Speed nut (Tinner) and the screws were listed as S18Z-6-54 RD HD screws.
I ended up using 7 Truss Head, slot machine screws into whatever Tinnerman nuts fit them.

                  Hank,

I have the same schematic and, too, could not find the specs as listed. Thanks.
