OK need some more help guys. I had a friend pull out my old canvas baggage compartment ( he did not take any pictures) and I purchased a new one the problem is that I can see how it goes on in the front and back but I have nothing for the sides to tie into. Does anyone have any pics or suggestions.

    Re: baggage compartment

There should be a wood strip down each side from the back of the seat back tube to the wood front of the hat shelf cross member. There are supposed to be snaps in the wood that hold the sides of the baggage sling.
Let me know if you need photos.

            1) First shot is looking back from the passenger door with the hat shelf in.
            2) Shot showing the hat shelf frame with the shelf cover removed
            3) Picture from passenger door of pilot side attach for baggage sling
            4) Pilot side view of passenger side hat shelf frame with cover off
            5) High view of frame from passenger side
            6) Passenger side baggage sling snapped in place
            7) Passenger side baggage sling unsnapped
            8) Thought # 6 didn't work and took a little wider shot

Let me know if you need dimensions. I also have a tracing of the cover if you need the shape.

Hey quit hijacking my question dude just kidding. Hank those are great photes but how do the wood side rails attach to the rear part of the baggage area and even more so how do they attach to the front where there is no wood at all.

                          Re: baggage compartment

The wood part that I think you are referring to is made of 3 pieces of wood that are nailed together like a "U" with a very wide base and very short uprights. It is mounted in the horizontal plane over the baggage area so that the "U" faces forward. Then the bottom of the "U" forms the rear sling support and the two uprights of the "U" form teh side sling supports. The wood dimension is about 1" by 3/4" as I recall.

The two side pieces are identical and they are about as long as the baggage sling is in the for/aft direction. These two pieces are a little wider than that steel tube you see under Hank's window and one side of the wood is routed out to an approx. 3/4" or 7/8" dia. curve for its length so that it fits right up against the tube. The depth of the routed portion is probably 1/4" to 3/8". These two pieces get fit snug against the tube an then wrapped with pinking tape and dope to hold them in place.

The rear support (the side bottm section of that "U") is nailed to the back of the side pieces and obliviously is about as wide as the fuselage.

There is no wood on the front of the sling. The sling is sewn or other wise fastened to the rear of seat sling.

                            Re: baggage compartment

Found these old pictures. They may help with the description Dave gave. Some slings I have seen were snapped to the seat sling, but I do NOT think that was normal. I would be worried the snaps would release and drop the sling.

                              Re: baggage compartment

I have a few questions about the hat shelf and hope someone can help me.

                              1. How wide is the hat shelf, forward to back?
                              2. What is the angle between the side of the shelf and the back of the shelf?
                              3. Does the shelf attach at a right angle to the board that forms the back of the baggage compartment? If so, that would make the hat shelf angle down somewhat in the back. Is this correct?
