  • Brake spring direction?

I have my brake housing apart, looking to see if my adjustors are showing wear.
Notice that on the port side housing, the return springs are running in opposite directions, but that on the starboard side the run in the same direction.
Do you think it makes any difference which way the spring faces or that one is opposite of the other?

NOTE: by 'direction', I'm using as a reference the fact that each spring has a long shank and a short/non-existant shank - Mike

I think it does matter, but from memory I cannot recall which is correct.

There is more space on one side of the "horseshoe" than the other, implying that the coil should go there.

The important thing is that the springs have enough room to do their job properly.

Rob - the logic was what was important; thanks, Mike

After some deliberation I am reviewing my opinion. The attached photo shows the right-hand assembly for my project. As can be seen, the forward spring has the coil down and the aft spring has the coil up. This will ensure that the spring is not laterally bending over the internal structure of the assembly.

The inset in the photo shows clearance of the foward spring.

Obviously the left-hand assembly would be opposite.

          Hope this helps.

A beadblaster & paint spray gun does wonders!

Rob - would a very slight film of grease on the 'v' surface that the adjustor faces ride on be out of the question?
If I tighten the adjustor, then loosen it, the adjustor stays in its narrowest because it can not slip back down the 'v' slopes. The only way to relax the shoes (without disassembly) seems to be to gently tap the shoes, which forces the adjustor apart. - Mike

                      Hey Vic,
I just ordered some shoes and rivets from Parts Angel (a member of this forum) $35. + shipping.
                      Hope that helps.

Mike...grease there would be desirable. But why would you wish to back it off? But if you do then a "tap" will indeed do it.

                          Errr...

Ron, please confirm you mean shoes and rivets..........
(rivets normally come with the linings, not the shoes)

But whatever, I am sure that Donna (Parts Angel) can do shoes, linings, rivets, and indeed all the replaceables for the Shinn brake assemblies! (That's why she is called Parts Angel).

She can be reached by clicking on "Members" in the top menu and going to P, she is close to the top, then send her a message.

Hello Rob - because one might overtighten the brake and want to back off and try again? - Mike
