  • New Taylorcraft decal

Flying my first contest this weekend in the Clipwing Tcraft and was trying really hard to get some friendly competition going with the local clip wing Cub owners. I have a Cub project as well so it is all fair game and meant to be in jest. Thought you guys may get a good laugh as well. It is on my rudder Hope I do not get beat by any Cubs. I'm praying that Giles Henderson doesn't show up.

Giles Henderson, hmmmm. That's a name I haven't heard for a long time. I used to love to see him kick the crap out of the S1S's and S2B's. That was back in my IAC days (70's and 80's). The man is poetry in motion. You're right. If he shows up, you could be in trouble.

Pretty much if anyone shows up I am in trouble, especially Giles. I am pretty green at all this competition acro. I learned really quick that my old school acro will not cut it with the judges. If anyone is interested in stopping by Wilson NC this weekend come on. Just praying for a little better weather forcast.

That is a great decal, have you given any thought to making it available to the unwashed masses? I have a couple of Super Cub drivers I like to bug now and then. L

Does any one remember Dwane Cole? I saw both he in his Clip wing T-craft, and his son Rolly in the Stearman. Both were unreal! VERY exciting! Rolly died when the 450 PW came off its mounts, collapsed the wing and trapped him in the cockpit (as I remember) so he and the passenger were unable to jump. I remember looking in the windows of the T-Craft. It had MANY cables running thru the cockpit to bolster its strength. JC

On August 2, 1964, the world of the Cole Brothers Airshow came crashing down, literally in an Illinois cornfield. Rolly, practicing in his Stearman for a forthcoming international competition in Spain, had Mel Stickney, airline and race pilot, as passenger in the front cockpit. All evidence points to an instantaneous breakup in the engine that caused great vibration. Mel Stickney was trapped when a wing folded back. Although there was altitude for Rolly to jump, the evidence again is he delayed to rescue Stickney. When Rolly jumped, it was to late. Both died.

Rockford, IL. about 1965 The Stearman was doing his routine when you could hear a loud bang like a gun shot in the middle of a snap roll. He rolled her upright, made a very gentle pattern and landed. The FAA boys were there to greet him before he was out of the plane. Turned out the main spar in the vertical stab had snapped and all that was holding it together was the fabric. I can still see the FAA boys, magnetic lights on their roof flashing, greeting him. L

I can get more made, I saved the design. A local graphics company cut them for me. Anyone wanting one just send me an e-mail to [email protected]
I do not remember what they cost. Seems like it was $10 a piece.

I was flying airshows back then and my father ; Al Barber, walked into the shop with an article on Rolly's death . His comment was " See even the best can die" ' It made me very careful from that moment on. I have many IAC trophies ; DUANE Cole used to stop by on occasion with Bill Sweet ; Harold Krier and many others . I flew with Duane in our Clip-Wing for his last show north of the Mason-Dixon in W. Va. at the Slate Run airport , he mentions it in one of his book. There is a Taylorcraft decal that goes onto a wood prop ; it was an overstamp on a Sensenich . It is in my pictures, don't know how to post it...
