Re: Need Your Opinion Regarding Purchase of Slick Mags

I've got a set of Lunch-box mags on one of my planes and they just keep working. You need to maintain them at Annual because their pretty old stuff. Fresno Airparts has had all of the parts I needed. No impulse, but starts every time. If they don't start when hot, change the coil.
If you haven't ordered Slick mags in the last 6mo., you might find the price and options have changed on their kits.

EDWIN I have been using the newer Style Bendix Mags for the lst several years about 2000 hours or so. I have two pairs of the old Mailbox mags but could not get points (Bendix Scintella s) Does Fresno carry point for em ? I wish more folks were not so quick to pull the trigger on the Bendix mags Old New or whatever. Hell yes I will use these old ones too if I can get new points and let my man go through em. Sky Ranch carries the Sheilded wires for em... Bendix Forever here here.

        Jim,
Those points wear like a hogs nose, so I haven't ordered any for a few years. But I had no problem in getting any parts from them. Make sure and call them as not all of their parts are listed. 559 237-4863.
The Bendix stuff is,by far, superior to the Slick. You can wrap up a ton of money buying the replacement parts for the Slick. Better to just buy a new one than to repair. If they were more dependable you would see rebuilds for sale. The only place to get 'um is eBay.
The benefit I see with the Slicks is I can get one from Aviall overnight. Less down time for the rentals. The good guy price is about $680.

I like the no AD aspect also...I did try to get bendix but the slicks were about 2k cheaper than buying -8's rebuilt. Tim

Has anyone tried the Emag in an experimental capicity of coures. I notice all modern engines using it, in fact all autos running gas are using it. I am very much considering trying a set.

A set of new Slick magneto's will go a good 600 hours. Slick recommends removal and inspection of the magneto's after 600 hours. These magneto's are very dependable.

What AD's are being referred to?

Coils & Rotors & Sintered Bushing are 1 time & go back to the '70's.

                    Impulse Hardness is from 1982.

Inspection of the flyweights @ 500 hr intervals has been rescinded in MOST cases.

                    Both good mags.

After 500 hrs some things come into play.

ie With Bendix/TCM you can grease the Rotor Bearings.

                    Slick says REPLACE.

There are parts for Slick only available as Assemblies as well.

Out of the last 7 airplanes I have annualed, 5 had AD's that should have been complied with. They had bad coils, impulse coupling pins, etc. They were signed off but when I sent them in for a 500, they found that they were not in compliance.

I have also sent in 9 carburetors that had the old black plasitc floats in them, 5 of those were stamped MF.

                      Trust but verify!
