Just checked with Aircraft Spruce, they have rebuilt Bendix mags for $517ea plus $190 core for a total of $707ea.
They stock new Slicks for $787 ea plus $150 core, total of $937.
There is no listing for a rebuilt Slick, must be a reason.

The newer style Bendix are better mags than Slicks. My mechanic showed me a side by side comparison of the spark between the two . The Bendix was far brighter (Yes Both Mags were "new",,,acyually the Slick was and the Bendix just rebuilt ) The old Scintelllas (sp) are good mags but yes heavy, non impulse, and points hard to find. The Slicks require you get some different gears also....check out THAT cost too . Also I believe the Bendix are more cost effective to repair vs repairing a Slick...do not quote me on THAT one though.

What I currently have are the Bendix SF4R mags with the wires coming out of the top. No impulse. The last maintenance was about five years ago when some parts were replaced on the right mag. I want to eliminate the radio noise so I thought it would just be easier to get new Slicks with harnesses and install shielded plugs in the lower, and as I have learned from this thread, two back cylinders. Then use my Ercoupe cups on the front top.
Should I keep the Bendix mags? Can shielded harnesses be purchased for these mags? What are the pros and cons of doing this? Thanks.

You can get shielded wires but with no impulse, they are a pain in the a$$ to hand prop in comparison to ANY mag that has an impulse. I sent in some junker sf-4's as cores to get the credit, one even worked but I was tired of fighting kick backs and hard starting without the impulse couplings. All I have to do is barely pull now and she fires right up. Tim
The A-65 slick kit comes with gears, and the price to overhaul a bendix is about the same as buying a new slick. Tim
I think not In fact no where close Who are you sending your Bendix to Overhaul ? Really who ? BENDIX ??? Send em to my Mechanic In SC. I will be glad to give anyone his name and my endorsement. If You have the old MailBox Mags then I can see not wanting to Overhaul for reasons already mentioned.
The only way I colud se a cost comparison of Overhauling A newer style Bendix as being more than a new Slick is if the Bendix were Shot ) shaft gears etc and the Slick was well just the Mag no Harness gears ( not a"kit" )

Well I sent to 10-51360-28 mags off for IRAN, the quote was 1098, that was using bendix parts, you can get a cheaper overhaul using Kelly CRAP, but most mechanics that say they can overhaul a mag do not have the machine to heat them to 250* and run them for 2-3 hours testing for .5-.7 inch spark jump. Any mechanic that tells you they are overhauled and never put them on a test bench is lieing....Tim

I'd rather have a mag without an impulse coupling than a mag that will shit the bed within 20 hours of taking it out of the box. A properly maintained bendix will make it 500 hours, whereas a slick MIGHT make it. I'm sure you can tell that I'm not biased...

Try and find a set of S-20 mags for a -8, about 4K new or overhauled. I tried for bendix first, went with slicks because I was tire of cutting off finger tips when propping...

When I bought my slick set of mags I got two impulse mags, a set of gears, all required nuts, washers, etc., two timing pins, a set of plugs, a second set of plugs (total 8 plugs) a set of instructions, a note asking me to call if I had any questions (which I did, and got prompt courteous answers and some interesting conversation. I also received a harness matched to my plugs and cups (as requested). They were nice and bright and clean and beautiully packed. Like my slick mags on my old engine, when properly timed they have been a marvel.
My old Ace had Bendix mags which gave me good service unless it was hot or if they decided not to fire. At which time I would prop until my fingers would bleed. My Ace only had one impulse. Having 2 impulse mags adds to the fun, but you have to be careful because that baby is going to fire when you move that prop!

Ah ha based on the reads it is FINDING the Bendix for the right PRICE. Slicks are not the Mag a Bendix is, As far as mechanics not having the equipment to properly Bench test I guess you need to see my mechanic then. Mine routinely go 500 hours not needing work when they are again Overhauled. It aint no $ 1098 either. Slicks are ok but again simply a cheap subsitute.

The newer Bendix magnetos that are reguired for a Continental A65-8 are like already mentioned dash 20 magnetos, S4RF-21 with an impluse coupling for the left and a S4RF-20 for the right with no impulse coupling, you can find them around in various aircraft supply markets, or go onto Barnstormers on the used market, I had one sent to Magneto ER in Arkansa and had a new Coil put in it which is a required AD,but most have already had that done , and a 500 hour inspection for $300 plus shipping , but I did get a good deal as he said , He personally thought that that combination of magnetos were an exellent choice. I chose the Bendix because of cost preference.
