    Re: July 8th, 9th & 10th 2011: EAA Chapter 82 Grass Roots Fly-In

It was a beautiful weather weekend. Just got home from Alliance, long...long flight. I was somewhat disappointed more Taylorcrafts didn't show up for the 75th anniversary. It was very cool to fly over the old Taylorcraft plant with Scarlett, almost 65 years since she was built. Pics to follow after my recovery, I'm tired...
    Cheers,

It was a pleasure to met and greet our dwindling tribe. heat & the price of fuel enroute , we were 4.35 , had a play in all this
      We had around 150 different planes stop by ; thanks to a great friend ; here are some to share tonight ;
the news story is posted with the Alliance Review ; see u all somewhere...

http://www.photosbydanweaver.com/Barber%20fly%20in/ Bill Murphy TF# 312 , will be the last to leave at 8AM tomorrow. Bruce Bixler & Doc are still here with their ship.

        Hey Forrest,

I will get some pictures up soon. Tina and I had a great time and we met some new friends while there. Very relaxing weekend.

Ryan, thanks for everything and it was a true pleasure to meet you and your family. (Nice t-shirt, too)! You did a great job with the power point pictures. I hope you got the rental Lincoln Town Car back safely, thanks a lot!!!

Anyone who was at Barber Field, I would appreciate it greatly if you captured any of my fly-bys on film or digitally. I don't have any flying shots of Miss Scarlett, yet.
        Cheers,
        Marty

It was a pleasure meeting everyone and we had a great time. Ryan, I'll be keeping up with your project by way of this forum. Good luck with it. It looks terriffic. That Pacer of yours looks outstanding as well!

We left around 230pm on Saturday and got back to my NJ base, Alexandria Field (N85) around 7pm. We left Alliance a few gallons low so we made two fuel stops (boy do I wish I had those wing tanks back!) The flight back was a bit bumpier than the flight out, the TCraft felt like a cork in the ocean at times. I'm glad my cousin was with me to take over once in a while. Next time we'll come Friday instead of Thursday and stay until Sunday.

Everyone was wonderful and it was great meeting so many new friends. It was also a welcome break from the chaos of the New York environment that somehow I manage to function in. All of the people we met either at the airport, the hotel or even the car rental agency could not have been nicer.

After seeing all of the pristine airplanes I definitely came to the conclusion that my bird needs a new paint job! I really liked Dave's 1940 DeLuxe scheme and I believe that is what I'll go with. I'll have to figure out colors. 716 should look pretty good with a new paint job and the wheel pants back on....hopefully by next fly-in.

I also liked Ken's electrical setup with that wind driven alternator, panel mount radio, transponder and intercom. I think I'll look into that as well.

Being an old car guy I was very glad to see the Corvair club show up. My family had several when I was growing up. Another terrific group of people.

My thanks to Forrest goes without saying!

Jim and Dondie have the original pre war colors matched to samples I found buried under old fabric on my 41. They can mix you an exact match to the Maroon and Taylorcraft Ivory if that is the colors you are talking about.
The colors the other companies "say" are original pre war ARE NOT RIGHT! Especially the Randolf colors. I matched up 3 or 4 samples of pre war Taylorcraft Ivory from different un-restored and protected areas of old parts from different planes in different parts of the country. They ALL MATCHED each other and that is what Jim and Dondie matched the new paint to.
            Hank

They are also great people to work with.

Thank you Hank. I really like that color scheme its simple and it looks really good. I'm thinking along the lines of Cream and Blue which I guess is Taylorcraft Ivory. I'm not sure about the blue. It seems like most of the paint and color scheme information is pre war. I'm really curious as to how my plane was painted when it was new as well. However I do like the color break mid fuselage and will probably go with that. I appreciate the information and would definitely be interested in contacting these fellows since i really want the original colors. Thanks again.

That's interesting. My 41 was originally Taylorcraft Ivory over Maroon, but the 45 was a "Deluxe" scheme in Taylorcraft Ivory over "Metallic Blue". That caused me some confusion at first since metallic colors really didn't come out till the 50s. Turns out if you look at literature from right after WW-II "Metallic" didn't mean what it did after the 50s. The blue used before and right after WW-II was what is now called Nieuport Blue and is supposed to be a color Cessna used for decades. It is very shinny and a nice bright blue. I have model of my 45 painted with it (unfortunately when I built it was when Randolph was telling everyone that Taylorcraft Ivory was now called Diana Cream) Diana Cream is NOT Taylorcraft Ivory. Not even CLOSE. It does look pretty good on the model, but not a good at the real Taylorcraft Ivory.

A pleasure meeting everybody. Marty, the car made it back safely, and helping is what we are here for. Still sifting through all of the pictures, and will post many today or tomorrow. We have had many tcrafts in over the last three years, what we need is for everyone to come back in the same year. I know there will be atleast one more there next year.

Hank, what a gorgeous model. you've given me a lot of information. Definitely Taylorcraft Ivory and the blue on your model looks great. I love the scheme too. I'm going to start looking for someone who will do the paint hopefully this fall.

Tom, here is a color scheme profile sheet from an old Taylorcraft Owners Club news letter. It shows color schemes that were most common to the BC12D. Just to make decisions harder!

Tom, there are several minor variations on the Deluxe color scheme (Ryans bottom one). I researched every picture I could find of those schemes and even got to talk to one of the painters from that era. He said they painted teh color separation by tagging the tape at the front and pulling it to the back. They didn't care where as long as it was the same on both sides. That's why you see some planes with the line ending at the bottom of the fin, some to the mid point between teh stab and bottom, and even a few with the line just under the stab (doesn't look very good). You also see some with the whole door bottom dark and some with a little bit of the light color under the door window. They just didn't worry about it. The rudder just had to be painted to match up with either NO dark color, a straight line to the back or a line that curved down on the rudder.
They also made the sweep back dark area on the wing tip different, depending on how they felt that day. Most came back to the tip Grimes light and were as wide as the aluminum leading edge (but it COULD be different!)
I also have the specs the Taylorcraft guys used for the NC markings and the different logos for the tail. Just yell when you are ready.
                          Hank

You might also want to pick up a Comet Taylorcraft model to paint and be sure you like the layout you pick. I should have tracings of all the Comet parts and the plans at home somewhere.

thanks for posting the pics! I especially like the last one with the vapor trail coming off of the prop in a spiral! Classic! That's the raw power of the Taylorcraft for ya!
