    Re: Fuel shut-off valve

Roger on that, the DOD and GSA seem to have this thing about making stuff as weird, complicated, and expensive as possible.

Good thing the adapter is only about 3 bucks.

        Re: Fuel shut-off valve

        Hal,
I just received the Hilborn/Speedway valve today. The thread is likely the NPSC/NPSM straight-mechanical coupling. Used a lot in hydraulics like Tim says. We are lucky on the adapter; appears to be a rarity.

Looks to me like I am going to have to get two adapters for either end as I don't want to be making an AN hose coupling 1/2 way through the firewall.

I figure NPT male out to a F-F NPT coupling to a NPT male/right angle AN-6 male. Should put me about an inch into the engine compartment at a nice angle for hooking on the AN short fuel line.

What's your plan at the firewall?

I still have 4 valves left that dont require the adapter....Tim

            Re: Fuel shut-off valve

            Hi Darryl,
I am going to use a short piece of very flexible hose (Speedway #62056) with a standard AN fitting for the valve and a right angle AN end fitting that will mate to a through-firewall AN union fitting. From there, another right angle fitting with stainless braided hose to the gascolator. All hose on the hot side of the firewall will be firesleeved. I think that I will also build a heat shield around the gascolator in case I ever want to run mogas. Then I should be safe from vapor lock. I also sloshed the fuel tank with an alcohol compatible sealant. I overhauled the carb and tested the fuel needle in alchohol. The plastic tip did not change dimensions in a month sitting in 90 proof Bacardi. I hope that I never get alchohol in my fuel but I don't think it will hurt anything.

Well, I guess that is more than you asked for but that's my plan.

You do realize that the racecar fittings are not real AN/MS, they look the same and they call them the same but they dont meet the spec. Tim

                Hal-
Fortunately my connection goes straight through the firewall so I just need the solid connection as noted above.

Tim- Thanks for the input on the "AN" fittings used.
Question: How tight does one make the straight O-ring fittings? I would assume that they require a firm metal to metal contact to prevent them from coming loose. They were just lightly screwed in as received.

Tight but dont smoke them down, the oring does the seal.

Well, since the only non-Aeroquip "AN" fitting in the plane is the outlet of the valve, I'm not too worried about it failing at a couple psi.

                      Re: Fuel shut-off valve

I would have to say on the non-AN, AN fitting is that it is relegated to about number 25 on my list of things to worry about on the plane. Something to keep in mind when one goes to crank down on them though.

Hal, I ordered 3 of the straight thread (NPSM?) to NPT adapters today. At that price I thought I should get a spare.

Do you have any valves left for sale?
