    Seasons Greetings all,

Can anyone recommend a good shop to have a Stromberg carb overhauled?

    Thanks,

    Hi
Yourself. If you're interested. They are very simple. I can send the overhaul and float check instructions by attachment. The problem would be, what type of metering pin to use. Some are only for av gas or auto. There was a SB on them. Need to get with Forrest for the proper type. I you want the attachment post me. I'll check tonight. Aircraft Spruce and others have the overhaul Kits. I got lucky, I came up with 4 carburetors. That saved me. I had bought one by Compton airport. It was gutted. Needle valve is about 75.00. I don't think you'll need a float. The needle valve seat and a washer are the only other internal components. Some came with a mixture control for the higher power engines.

This guy was recently recommended by Steve Krog in the Coupe Capers publication:

        Glen,

My Stromberg was rebuild (and still operating fine) many years ago by Aircraft Systems Inc. in Rockford, IL. http://www.acs-rfd.com/

This guy really knows his stuff and he will treat you right. He has all the correct parts and an amazing array of original test equipment. Has personally worked on everything from "small" carbs like ours all the way up to the huge hydroplane engines. He recently donated some rebuilds to the war bird folks out at Chino, CA airport.

I advise that you be very careful doing a Stromberg overhaul yourself, especially if you haven't done them before, or don't have the correct test equipment. There is more to them than meets the eye.

              Re: Carb Rebuild

I made the mistake of letting the owner of a Cessna 120 work on his Stromberg carb during an annual inspection, on the first flight after the inspection, he crashed it and claimed "carb ice", I've always wondering about that, send it out for a rebuild, Otis

I realize this was posted a fair bit ago, but any chance I could get a copy of those instructions?
                Thanks

                    Re: Carb Rebuild

You can find all of this information on the internet and print it out, I did. There is a lot of good information on the Fly Baby page here: http://bowersflybaby.com/tech/engines.htm

Before you tackle this you are going to have to learn how the carb and float bowl works and make some tools, the main one being the float seat tool. I made up a piece the carb bowl sits in which you have to level carefully. It is an extremely tedious job to set the float bowl fuel level.

The guy in Illinois is extremely expensive. He knows what he is talking about but the last time I checked he charged about $850.00 just for the rebuild. The guy out in California did a friend of mine's carb for a lot less. I want to say about $450.00, but don't hold me to that. Just call the people recommended and see what you want to pay.

The actual cleaning of the carb isn't that bad as long as you know what you are doing. The set-up of the float level and making sure you have all the correct parts for your particular engine takes a little more time.

Personally, I would pay someone to make sure it is done right.

                      Re: Carb Rebuild

Got to agree with that. I "CAN" rebuild a carb, Not sure I "WOULD". When a carb float is set wrong, the engine may run just fine with the tail down, and then continue running fine on take off just long enough for you to not be able to make it to a safe landing site when the engine goes all funky on you. The float and needle seat are both not hard to do, but full of little things you can really screw up.
