  • Basic Manuvers

I am just curious at to how many of you that fly regularly practice the basic manuvers (slow flight turns about a point, etc) and stalls when you fly. I personally do about every time I go and practice when not flying cross country. I have friends that have never done a manuver outside of their checkrids or BFR's. How many of you perform spins regularly? Tim

    Re: Basic Manuvers

Unless I am on a mission to go somewhere, which is rare, I usually do at least one or two of the basic manuvers every flight. Several times a year, especially if it has been awhile since my last flight, I go through most of the manuvers, including spins. I personally feel that slow flight, with turns, is a great way to get reaquainted with the feel of an airplane. I like to do stalls to verify that my airspeed indicator is reasonably close, and that the rigging is still where it should be. Of course I also do them because it is fun.

I too have heard of people that hadn't done a stall since their checkride many years ago. On a similar note, I once gave a lecture on weight and balance at an EAA meeting. One person there, who had owned his airplane for several years, didn't have a clue what gross weight, empty weight, or usefull load was for his airplane. He couldn't even give a ballpark estimate.

I didn't until I started giving primary flight instruction...First, I demonstrate, then my student tries to scare me, then I demonstrate again, then the student tries again....then I demonstrate once more and they usually do it okay...then I just talk them through it until they do it themselves getting better each time with a little encouragement. It's rewarding in the end.

I went out about a month ago in the Starduster II and really praticed, loops, cuban 8's,3 turn spin each direction, barrel rolls,aileron/slow rolls, and a couple hammer heads. It's not uncommen to find me doing these manuvers however on this day I had a mission in mind......a friend asked me if these manuvers could be done at 2.5 G's or less, I knew most could be but had really never tried to do it all minimum G loads. After some practice and playing with the my entry speeds, etc I was not only able to keep it under 2.5 G's but I was able to do them all at less then 2 G's! Most of the time I was able to keep her at or below 1.75 G's.

Starduster--Nice. How many toys do you have Kevin?

I took some training in an Cessna Aerobat years ago. My loops got pretty good, but I remember most the rewarding feeling when I got good enough to play the rudders for nose position upside down in a roll.

Now I do slow flight, power on stalls, 45 banked turns, my "precision entry" into a 1/2 turn spin, needle ball and alcohol practice when we have a no-horizon hazy day here. When we have a strong cross wind here it requires a VERY low level turn into a strong wind, to land on the turn off, that is quite interesting to do. Fun stuff.

I found a while back that my neck hurt pretty bad from doing multi-turn spins. Couldn't figure it out for a while. My best guess is the weight of headphones that I use! Didn't have phones on in the Aerobat before so it wasn't a problem then. Haven't got around to trying one without the headphones yet.

I also want to abuse the Tcraft in a slip at altitude, same as if I was way too slow on final in a slip, and see what it does. Bet that will be pretty interesting.

I found if you slip it hard enough, the window starts to rattle, just before it drops out.
                and rolls on its back
but it was good to know at a safe altitude
                try it

How many toys do I have....too damn many!lol. It does take a little gettin use to using the rudder as an elevator and elevator for a rudder nut once ya do get comfortable doing so,you can do almost anything ya want,as long as the airplane is capable.

                    Re: Basic Manuvers

I just realized the accidental entry into a spin from a slip is EXACTLY the same maneuver as the "precision" entry to a spin that I was taught years ago. Only difference is not packing a little power. How interesting. Scary thought, rolling out the bottom like that on short final--

Man are we getting a storm out here. Came in from the other side of Hawaii. Strange looking on the Satellite images. Forecast to last more than a week. Wonder if it will regroup and hit the remainder of the country.
