Re: My 'New' Taylorcraft Miss Scarlett

    Hank,

Thanks for the info. I have been doing some research on it, no antenna as of yet.

I cannot find a viable source for the cups, any ideas?
    Cheers,
    Marty

Sometimes they come up on eBay or Barnstormers, or you can make them. The drawings are on the list here someplace. If someone doesn't chime in with exactly where they are, I have the article from the EAA magazine that shows how to make them.
You only need the top ones and sometimes there is enough room under the cowl for shielded plugs on the top back two but my A&P/IA wasn't sure how to handle two shielded and two unshielded on one mag. They are out there like that, but paperwork is king and if your IA doesn't like it, don't do it. I haven't heard any mechanic with a problem with using a shielded mag on the bottom and unshielded one on top.

          Hank,

I take it I can use shielded wires with the Bendix mags? (I had Slicks on the other planes). Also, it has been too long since I had the other T-Crafts, what plugs would you use in the bottom cylinders?

I think I remember someone on here mentioning they had the die to re-thread the cans, I will have to look. I will check out Fresno and see what they have, thanks!

My wife and I have talked about going to Amana, IA sometime, thanks for the invite!
          Cheers,
          Marty

You need to check the manual for each mag type and see what it takes to switch from shielded to unshielded. I still have the full size shielded plugs on mine with the huge ugly blisters on the cowl. I need to do the same as you, change over and make new top cowl doors. My second problem is when I was fixing up my plane the mags on it were the throw away type and were not the right part number authorized for use on my engine. A real jury rigged nightmare. Amazing that they worked so well!
The plugs for your engine are listed in any of the parts books. I think the shielded ones I have are M-41Es but you need to check against your engine and the brand of plugs you want.

Last thing is it's Walter who is in Iowa, I'm in south east Virginia. If you get down this way we can hit the best privately owned collection of warbirds in the world. The restoration facilities are a couple of hundred yards from my hangar. Last weekend I was resisting running my hands over a fresh restoration of a Wildcat, had my head in the hatch of a TBM Avenger, walked inches from a Mig 3, an AD Skyrader, a YAK an FG-1D Corsair and a newly restored Fiesler Storch. That's just the ones in the restoration hangar for maintenance! NO WONDER I take so long getting stuff done on my plane! There ALWAYS seems to me a Merlin Wright or PW engine taking off or landing (little less often for the Russian planes)

              Hank,

I know where to find you, , I was just commenting to Walter. We are pretty close to him here in Central IL, also known as blizzard country as of late. I would like to visit sometime, though!!! I love warbirds.

I have a friend, a little out of my tax bracket, that owns about 13 planes. P-51, (I have flown in it many times), F4U-5N Corsair, L-2M, PT-22, Soko Galeb Jet, Beech AT-11, Extra 300L, T-34 Mentor and his dad used to have a B-25, Axis Nightmare, that I got to crew chief on and fly periodically. He has a Fleet 9 project that is next up on the list to do. Funny thing is, he tells me the most fun airplane he owns is the L-2, he is the one who got me into T-Crafts. We have another guy with a P-51 on the same airport.

I have M41E plugs now with Bendix SF4R mags, if I remember correctly. I have no manuals for these mags, yet. I couldn't find anything online to download. Maybe someone else can chime in on this... Please!
              Cheers,
              Marty
