OK guys I have a 46 Tcraft that I'm restoring and I have made it to the landing gear. I have been told that I have to cut the bungees to get the gear off, the problem is they are not even a year old and were only used for 5 months of flying ( been working on it since May ) does anyone have any guidance on this issue. I have also been told there is a tool for replacing the bungees somewhere for 100.00 the one on Aircraft spruce is 239.00 hard to justify for one time use.

Ray,

Whichever tool you end up buying, it will NOT be a one time use. The bungees on a Taylorcraft need to be replaced every 3-5 years, depending on how much you fly and what type of flying you do. Give this guy a call and he can fix you up.

If you have the tool from david Rude it is possible to remove the bungee's if you are very,very careful and very,very determined however 9 times out of 10 your going to pinch or cut a band or two trying so it is really better just to replace them(a small price to pay for the extra piece of mind since your restoring the airplane anyway). I would never reuse a set of bungee's no matter what. And if you plan to keep the airplane then the tool will pay for itself the first time you use it. I also agree 100% with Richard. If I have an airplane that uses bungee's I will replace them every 5 years wheather they need it or not if it's hangered, every 3 years if it spends more then 1 year of that time outside or flies an average of more then 100 hours a year wheather it's inside or outside.

Its $93 for the tool, $13 postage, total $106.

I am away from home and unable to send any tools for at least a few weeks.

I pull bungies all of the time, I use an older bumper jack with a pin in the bottom to keep it in place. I use a 1" strap looped around the bungie and the jack, jack it up then tilt it over the flange. Tim
