  • Long Johns For A65

With cold weather fast approaching what kits might be available for keeping the A65 in my BC12-D happy. I see Wag Aero has oil tank and intake runner covers. At what temperature would one use these below and what other covers and/or tricks are available. I have a T hanger with electricity so warming it up to start is not too big a problem.

My experience on a J-3 was they were worthless. Maybe if you
Had a real cowling like a T-Craft they might help just a little.

The oil tank jacket is good fr about 10 degrees of oil temperature. The intake covers, AFAIKT, are useless.

I use an oil tank cover similar to Wag's. I made mine from two welders helmit winter liners, about $6 each at the welding supply that I used.

I also cover the the hole in the cowl under the prop. I have a piece os aluminum cut to fit and some threaded inserts in the cowl to hold it. I have used duct tape in earlier times.

I do not block the cylinder holes in the cowl.

oh yeah - I did this when I lived in NY, in NC it doesn't get too cold I tend to do it less here

I have a cover for the airintake under the the prop and two partial covers for the cylinders about a 5" hole for the cylinders and 2" for carbheat and cabinheat. keep the cylinder temp up for safer idle and oiltemp up somewhat during desents. It reduses the airflow to the cabin and the carbheat but has never caused a problem. It was copied from another Taylorcraft with a O 200.
Just dont bring her back to idle, never below 1200 rpm in the cold unless you are on the ground. I dont fly below 25 degF on the ground.

Thanks for all he suggestions. I suspect I will experiment with duct tape this winter and create covers for next year. On the tri-pacer the oil cooler cover was to be used only below 40 degrees. Would that be a reasonable starting point for the oil tank blanket and cover for the hole under the prop?

Put the oil tank cover on in October and take it off in April. You will not need to remove it unless the temp get really warm. 50deg. would be a good place to start with the tape anything over that and I would remove it.

                Tom,

I have a question regarding your '41 Tcraft. Would you please send your email address to me?

                Thanks,
