Fire destroys building in Lower Alloways Creek
Wednesday, November 24, 2010
By Kelly Wolfgang [email protected]
LOWER ALLOWAYS CREEK TWP. - A fire early Tuesday afternoon left a family's metal outbuilding gutted and an airplane housed inside destroyed.
The blaze, reported at 12:34 p.m. Tuesday on the Harris Farm on Beasley Neck Road here, is believed to have been caused by a wood-burning stove inside the building.
What was left of the building, which was made of metal and used to store the two-passenger plane and various tools, was torn down by firefighters after they extinguished the flames.
Fire companies from throughout Salem County and neighboring Cumberland County responded to the fire which sent a pillar of thick black smoke into the sky which could be seen for miles.
Walter Harris, the son of the owner, said that he was burning wood in a stove and went inside his home, which is adjacent to the building, to make lunch.
About 15 minutes later, his mother, Harriet Harris, came inside the home and told him that the outside building was on fire, he said.
Walter Harris then said he then entered the building and attempted to put out the fire with a garden hose.
Harris suffered minor burns, but did not seek medical treatment.
Realizing that the fire was out of control, he then called 911 and fire, ambulance and police officers arrived shortly after, according to Harris.
"The firefighters were pretty proficient," Harris said. "They really did a good job."
Harris said that the family lost a variety of tools, shop equipment, and a small two-person Taylorcraft airplane in the fire.
Lower Alloways Creek Fire and Rescue Company responded first and remained in service for three and a half hours.
They were assisted by Quinton Volunteer Fire Co., Elsinboro Fire Company, Union Fire Company No. 1, Mannington Fire Co., Alloway Township . Fire Co., Stow Creek Fire from Cumberland County, Quinton Ambulance, Lower Alloways Creek EMS and Rescue Squad, Bridgeton EMS.
